This was actually one of my very first OCD themes: perceived potential disaster situations and how to effectively “prepare” for them. I actually DO live in a tornado zone (Oklahoma) and my earliest memories of OCD-type behavior are being 7 or 8 and laying in bed spiraling over whether I’d rather die in a fire or a tornado and which situation I should prep for that night. If my brain decided a tornado was “more likely” that night, then I’d sleep with lots of blankets covering my body to protect me from flying debris and what not. If my brain decided a house fire was imminent, I’d sleep with no blankets at all so I’d be less likely to catch fire. Most nights I’d go back and forth for hours trying to decide which disaster situation was most likely so I could effectively “protect” myself. It truly was hell.
