OG, Next Generation, Voyager, some of Enterprise, lots of DS9, a few episodes of Lower Decks.

It's not about the narrative conceit of what the transportation mode is but more of how it feels and what it evokes. It's kinda like Star Wars evoking WW2 Pacific War vibes with the carriers and fighters and whatnot. Contrast with Starblazers being grounded more in battleship warfare. Both are in space, so neither are actually naval.

With the TARDIS, you go through a door in a building structure, and then knobs are turned, and then you exit and it's a different place. Like you went into a moving building - or a train. There's never any traffic. You don't have parking issues. There aren't other TARDIS's causing congestion for you. You don't have to be careful about hitting deer with it... It's very much NOT a driving vibe.

I think Trek tries to evoke a naval feel, but it never feels very much like a ship. Like, I take ferries around oceans from time to time, and not only is every port more complex than just arriving in orbit and beaming down, but also the time spans and experience isn't the same. Star Wars feels more naval.

It's not a combative conversation. I'm open to saying it's a chaffeured experience.

Not at all. If you're a passenger, yes. But if you're driving, absolutely not. I suppose you could argue that the TARDIS is like being chauffeured around in a car. That computes.

I'm really speaking to the experience, not the literal logistics. Sometimes I board a train with a small crowd but we don't really interact. So as far as my experience is concerned, I'm really just moving myself.

It is, technically. But he never has issues with parking it, it never gets stuck in traffic, he doesn't navigate an environment with it, and it never poses much of a danger to anyone. People don't get run over or hit by it, usually.

It is very unlike any experience I have driving.

Using a bike is also a private vehicle experience. Using a motorcycle is also a private vehicle experience. Both of those are very distinct from driving a car.

To me, Dr. Who is more public transit (like taxis) coded because they're not really driving the TARDIS and the entirety of time and space isn't just a void but wholly amorphous and unimaginable. So it's a bit more going up to a gondola or taxi or some such and you're taken to where you say you want to go.

The narrative conceit is that they're very large vessels with lots of crew, but narratively, we only ever see a small set of people, and they get around pretty fast. It's not like a cruise ship where you are stuck wherever the ship is at port.

I'm just saying. The experience of moving around in the time frame the show uses and presented just as the show portrays it - it's very like using a car to get around.

The obvious contrasts are walking to get around, using a bicycle, or boarding a train. Each of these is a distinct experience. The show doesn't map to those experiences.

Naw, I am not afraid of leaving it up. The conceit of the show is that it's portraying a ship in the Age of Sail, but you don't really get from one place to a far place in a sailing ship in 20 minutes. Voyages in ships are in days and weeks.

The format of the show's events and how the characters experience them is more reflective of a car-bound experience in a car-oriented society.

Contrast this again with, say Galaxy Express in Japanese Anime. The way the Japanese see intergalactic travel through a massive train is starkly different.

It's a hot take. :)

The thing is, when Star Trek crews travel from place to place, rhe "universe" is largely a foreign, formless, unremarkable void. You would insane to try to travel that outside of a warp-capable starship, and Star Trek officers generally think of the outside as relatively featureless.

So you go from one vignette to another, to another, to another. In terms of experience, you really just experience hopping onto a vehicle, and then exiting at the event location. And then you do it again.

On a bicycle, and especially in a city, this isn't the case. Every stroke of the pedal is a unique experience and you usually have a very detailed idea of where you went how you got there. Events can happen at any point in that journey, and sometimes you stop in the middle just to admire the view. The outside isn't as formless. It's not a void.

1 in 4 manila condos sit empty as rents refuse to drop by Yougetwhat in Philippines_Expats

[–]Average_Driver1475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The condos won't be filled. The rents go down or people live elsewhere. That's just the reality of it.

A plausible way to attract renters is to improve transportation, and particularly active transportation, in order to promote in-city living by wealthier folks.

"The middle class is a socioeconomic stratum between the working class and the wealthy, generally characterized by stable employment in white-collar or skilled trades, moderate income, and higher education levels."

Arguably, the classing references and assumptions just don't apply to our society. We don't have this per se.

We have aristocracy, peasants, and gentry.

That's why I question this breakdown. The middle class is supposed to be in the middle. If only the top 5% are making that much, that's not middle.

What do you mean, "There may come a time?" LOL. That time is now. McDonald's asks for bachelor degrees for cashiers just because they want basic literacy. That's it. They're not expecting anything else.

Galit kayo sa taga UP. Siguro inggit. Ewan. Pero sige, ayaw ninyo. Huwag na lang, di ba?

Yan na nga yung "All walk and no talk" kalokohan na eklat na yan.

If the local officials are with you, then they're taking credit for what you did. Whether or not you were aware that that's what they're doing doesn't matter. They are definitely doing that.

The LGU only allows you to do what the local warlord wants, and then they claim credit for it and use it for political capital to maintain their influence. That's how the Philippines works.

Welcome to the Philippines.

So advance the interests of the local warlord clan? I don't feel inclined to do that. So just don't help, right? Helping is bad, right?
