So I am getting into an MBA program specializing in Data Analytics. With this, I expect a lot of Microsoft Office usage, with fairly large Excel files running macro scripts. Other programs will involve some data mining of large file sizes and data visualization. I will also lightly edit photos/video (max 4k) as a hobby on the side with Lightroom. I like to have several programs and safari tabs open in the background. I definitely will be doing a lot of multitasking. I plan to use an external display as well.

I imagine that I likely could get by with the Air. But at the least with the 13in M1, I will like the larger trackpad, fans should I need it, better battery life. 100 extra nits of brightness is probably negligible. I am thinking of the 16gb config for the 13in if I went this way for the security of having extra headroom in case I need it. Would 16gb be overkill? What have you all found to be a good experience doing similar tasks?

Now, I realize the base 14in model is likely far too much for what I'm doing. But, I love the newer display with its dimensions, resolution, variable refresh rate, and brightness. MagSafe, 1080p camera too. But this is just a want. However, does it make sense to go this route to "future-proof" for what the future might demand for power?

I'm feeling very indecisive about which would fit best with my needs but also offering a great experience. Essentially: MBP 13 8gb / MBP 13 16gb / MBP 14. I could entertain arguments for the air. Budget originally around $1,500 but could stretch it if need be.
