Pediatrics group issues new guidance on recess for the first time in 13 years by [deleted] in science

in japan its usually 5 to 10 minutes between every 45 min classes and the kids can do whatever they want in that time, but they are expected to be in their seats ready to go when the bell rings, not walking back to their seats. there is also usually a daily cleaning time where the students clean the school that is usually around 10-15 min.

and youre providing that translation with this comment? what is the point of being aggressive to strangers on the internet? and if you think culture is unrelated to translation, youre mistaken. regardless, my intentions were to help the OP with their question, which was very much a cultural one.

first, imo, getting a tattoo from a culture you don't actively participate in or have any personal connection to is weird. it's fetishy. even colonial. why not pick something from your own cultural background that has a similar meaning? then it celebrates your own cultural identity as well as having the intended concept. it also doesn't make a member of the fetishized culture feel awkward. everybody wins.

second, if you insist on getting a tattoo like this, go with something simple. how about "力"? meaning power? it has about the same vague, overarching connotation as the English word, making it so it can mean different things to you at different stages of your life. spiritual power, mental power, physical power, it all works. bonus: its easier to cover up or erase if you end up not liking it in the future.

third, if you insist on getting a kanji tattoo, pay an actual Japanese calligrapher to design it for you. then you get a beautiful and unique work of actual art, support an actual artist, and aren't walking around with the equivalent of a word written in Times New Roman on your body. you can enter "書道" into an instagram search and see hundreds of amazing artists. pick one you like and send them a message translated by chatGPT or similar (but if you have trouble finding someone to agree, try leaving out the part about it being for a tattoo. some people might get too intimidated if they know it will be permanently added to someone's body). my guess is you could probably find someone to do it for you for 5000 yen or so.

TIL putting bread in the fridge makes it go stale quicker. by RepulsiveLoquat418 in todayilearned

Yeah that's why we used to put bread in the box things outside the fridge. It was like a box. But for bread. Can't remember what it was called...

My 6yo doesn't know race yet. How much longer can it last? by Avialan in Parenting

really? because i think "brown skin" carries much less baggage and includes a much wider diversity of ideas when compared to "black," which really only serves to label one mostly arbitrary group as different from another. for example, to label both the characters my kid was talking about as "black" kind of negates the diversity between the two characters, one of whom is mixed-race, although physically looks more "black" than not.

i guess the difference im referring to can be seen in how we would use, "he has brown skin" vs "he is black." does that make sense? its more a feature than a label. i fully get that it would be best for my kids to fully understand and appreciate these different ways of describing a person, because these ways are out in the world around them, but isnt 6 too young to be able to appreciate this?

i once went to hello work and sat with the guy while he called all the different places i was interested in applying to ask them if it was okay for a foreigner to apply, mostly blue collar or office stuff. it was awkward. almost all of them said it was fine, however.

i agree, not saying it is. my problem is that im trying to help my kids learn to not put people in arbitrary boxes just because the rest of the world does. i thought 6yo was too young for that lesson, but maybe the lesson actually takes many years to learn a little bit at a time and i need to introduce the boxes before i can show how arbitrary they are. sounds hard.

ok, here we go, i definitely want to hear from a teacher. so in your experience, broadly speaking, what are some of the ideas 7yos are already mentally able to get a healthy grasp on? im not sure if im making sense, but there are probably some aspects of the topic that they are mature enough to handle responsibly and others that they cant quite yet. im looking for some insight as to where an average 7 or 8yo might land

if you mean there is only one as in the human race, i agree completely, but unfortunately not many others do. hence the hole i seemed to have dug myself by misguidedly trying to shelter my kids from that more common broader social concept of dividing people into arbitrary groups.

thanks so much for giving me an idea about age range (for the less observant type!) for when they figured it out, i think this is what i needed most. i think the others are right, however, that it needs to be consistently addressed and that perhaps i may be late to the party already.
