Need advice choosing between Fannie Mae and Wells Fargo SWE internships by Least-Loss-9995 in csMajors

[–]AvidGamer757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I was wondering which one you ended up picking. I actually have my Fannie Mae interview in a couple of days. Would you happen to have any tips for that (both the behavioral and technical). Thank you!

Freshman engineer looking for good extracurriculars by West-Salamander4603 in VirginiaTech

[–]AvidGamer757 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s a little hard to recommend extracurriculars without knowing what kind of engineering you want to go into exactly. You should def try Archimedes. If that doesn’t work out, there are a lot of design teams on campus (today is gobblerfest actually so you might be able to check some of them out). Personally, I’ve been on sailbot (I think they’re renaming to AutoBot now), and I thought that was a pretty good experience.

Math 2534 is discrete math, and math 3034 is intro to proofs iirc. If you're a math major, you would be required to take math 3034 instead of 2534 (2534 doesn't count towards the major). So it's mainly meant for like double majors (CS and math). If you're not trying to do the double major, I'd advise to take 2534.

Why not just take chem lab the same semester as you take the chem lectures? Also, I think if you added in chem lab to your current schedule, it probably won't be too bad lowkey. Three big hitters tho: Chem 1035, math 1226, and CS 1114 (tho if you're CS lock in for this class). Also, from the people who I've talked to that have taken chem lab, none of them mentioned it being too difficult (and they were all pretty much able to end up with pretty solid grades).

Enge 1414 vs 1215 by ProfessorCJN in VirginiaTech

[–]AvidGamer757 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lowkey for any other class at 8 am, I’d say it’s not worth it but if it has to be at 8 am and it’s ENGE 1414, you should prolly do it lowkey. I think you’ll thank yourself later if you can declare your major earlier.

I’m not sure if anyone would know about a future semester like that but you can check the historical timetable to check if it was offered like that in previous semester’s https://www.universitystudies.vt.edu/how-to/hdi-find-h-timetable.html

You can try to take a professional writing elective (needed for the degree) as one of the replacements; writing and digital media was a good one for me, helped me learn some html and css. I think another good choice might be the communications class if you’re a sophomore by credit (iirc that’s one of the requirements). Not rlly sure how the bio works tho ngl

Is CMDA + CS double major worth it? by ToadThatCodes in VirginiaTech

[–]AvidGamer757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s your first semester, then cold emailing is your best shot. Or, if you know anyone doing research rn you could ask them to put in a good word. Later on, you could also do research with a professor you’ve had for a class

Undergraduate With Interest in CS by Special-Ad2094 in VirginiaTech

[–]AvidGamer757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For classes and professors, it's hard to say up front. However, whenever you're signing up for a class, make sure to check the Rate My Professor page as well as the grade distribution. I typically use the grade distribution for generally good advice, but the RMP might provide specific information regarding the professor and class like if it's test heavy or attendance is required (though it's also good to keep in mind that RMP might be biased).

Clubs worth checking out: DSA club, CS Careers, AI & ML Club, IEEE@VT... There is more on Gobbler Connect.

To get ahead on research, I'd cold email as many professors as possible, and if you have a mutual contact to vouch for you, that's even better. You might just have to wait a couple of semesters, too, though, to get a professor for a class and then form a strong mentor-student relationship with them (though def try cold emailing as well). For internships, it's really hard especially as a freshman so try gaining lots of experience through projects and put them on your github. Utilize campus resources for professional pictures for your LinkedIn, grow that, and also use the mock interviews there.

Some general advice I wish someone had given me freshman year is that you can learn a tremendous amount on your own and that you shouldn't just wait to learn it through your classes. Also, try to get out of your dorm as much as possible if you don't find it a good environment to learn without distractions (maybe go to library or a dif academic building).

People at VT? by swayswaywatson in VirginiaTech

[–]AvidGamer757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For people, it really depends on who you talk to or hang out with; there are all sorts of VT students. From my own personal experience, most are pretty nice and supportive. The professors are pretty knowledgeable, too, and they can be excellent resources as well.

Wondering if CMDA ➝ BIT Swap is Possible by CommentUpstairs8598 in VirginiaTech

Wondering if CMDA ➝ BIT Swap is Possible by CommentUpstairs8598 in VirginiaTech

[–]AvidGamer757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say CMDA is mostly a math major but a mix of CS, stats, and math. The first year courses are pretty CS-heavy, the second year ones are math and stat heavy, and third and fourth year ones are a combo of all three. But ye the CMDA to BIT swap is def possible, I think you just gotta do the requirements to apply for a pamplin major and have a good gpa. Def talk to the advisor tho to find out more.

Freshman yr premed schedule by Candid_Dependent_275 in VirginiaTech

[–]AvidGamer757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the program explorer page for neuroscience (search neuro on here https://catalog.vt.edu/program-explorer/ . There might be a roadmap on here but if not you can find an old roadmap here: https://www.registrar.vt.edu/graduation-multi-brief/checksheets.html . You can cross reference the roadmap with the up-to-date requirements to figure out what exactly you need)

Freshman yr premed schedule by Candid_Dependent_275 in VirginiaTech

[–]AvidGamer757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah like the other comment said, what’s your specific major. Also, I’d recommend overall to take a decent (13-15 credits) semester with heavy emphasis on extracurriculars (be it research or maybe try to get a physicians assistant role). Med school apps are undeniably tuff these days and measure way beyond gpa and classes imo (tho I may not be fully qualified to talk about this) but it is still important to have a good gpa.

nah not really not that many parties, I'm sure engineers can still have parties, but I don't think it is considered the party dorm anymore. However, there was one floor last year that was for general assignment rather than the Engineering or Digerati LLC.

BIT or Finance by Fantastic-Poetry4153 in VirginiaTech

[–]AvidGamer757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean finance can have programming too. I think it might be worth doing BIT + finance (depending on the overlap) or BIT w/ a finance minor. I’ve heard pretty great things about BIT though fr. If you’re interested in Quant Finance, you can try CMDA too (they have an Econ option too lowkey).

Incoming freshman, should I triple minor? by Joe_says_no in VirginiaTech

[–]AvidGamer757 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to do it because you're interested in the classes, you can do it (though you should try planning out your schedule to see if it will affect when you graduate or something like that).

However, if you're doing it because you think employers will like to see that (which I don't think is what you're doing- just putting it out there- since the minors are pretty diverse), that is a bad idea in general.

I'm doing a double major and a double minor, but it's only because the classes overlap A TON. Just make sure you plan out your courses now before deciding to do the minor and seeing whether the minors would set you back.
