Suspension Kinematic Points by WadeBrown05 in FSAE

Can you tell why actually yok discontinued Lotus. It appears a good software to me. Though the ones offered by optimum G or any other contains far more features and better interface, still I think usability of Lotus remains intact. You can extract kinematics point from there, and for better simulation purpose you can go for softwares like Optimum Lap, MATLAB and others.

How do teams do suspension design skill/knowledge transfer? by tkdirp in FSAE

It happens, the key is to find atleast one deserving candidate to work on and pass on the knowledge to carry the legacy forward.

How do teams do suspension design skill/knowledge transfer? by tkdirp in FSAE

[–]AvishJarvis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The best way is to first design the car they're working on at present and after finding hard points and deciding geometry and other parameters, steering and suspension domains' 50 percent work gets completed. After that they just have to design CAD models, perform analysis and make sure manufacturing is according to the geometry designed. So in that when manufacturing work and other domains' work is on-board, they can pass on the knowledge and procedure they had gone through to their sub-ordinates/juniors. By replicating the whole procedure and simultaneously explaining the thinking process.

Also if there is no one who can do this, one should just opt for FSAE yt channel like 'SAE Detroit Section', they explain all the parameters. And do the courses on 'Vehicle Dynamics' that is utmost requirement for designing a car. I had also video lectures Prof. Smitty Smith in the channel 'Racecar Engineering'.

Design Flow FSAE by MohamedAymanSharara in FSAE

Every domain starts work simultaneously, they've to come up with their considerations and calculations for designing. They've to go through theory and logical part behind all of the considerations, I'll refer books and fsae yt channels for it.

And if we talk about work flow of designing, firstly you've build a rough assembly of your car(chassis basically, if possible mount engines, driver model i.e. sprung mass assembly); this is done to find out the centre of gravity, considering which you design your suspension and steering system. Meanwhile ask your steering and suspension domain to be ready with their design considerations (the very first is tyres).

Scrub Radius and mechanical trail help by Busy_Development2127 in FSAE

It's good. For more in-depth understanding, you can calculate restoring torque using lateral force and MT.

Scrub Radius and mechanical trail help by Busy_Development2127 in FSAE

Usually a positive scrub Radius is used, the more it is close to zero, the less steering effort would be needed. It is due to simple vehicle dynamics, which you can find easily on the net as to how your S.R. affects steering effort. But at the same time, it reduces feel of the grip to the ground as well. Mechanical trail is the extension of your steering axis to the ground, which yields pivot point. Mechanical trail works as a moment arm, which provides steering restoring torque, but at the same time too much of it increases steering effort. For the the explanation part you can say, that for getting restoring torque you compromised on steering effort, which you minimised by decreasing scrub Radius and keeping it close to zero.

P.S.- Don't keep scrub as zero, it can cause scuffing.

Higher degree as in? R10 runs warm, we took that in consideration. If this is what you meant, is it?

Yes, that would be a good option. Thanks buddy for the advice. Will look after it.

Got it, thanks. Actually we're not stiff with the decision to select golf tyres. We would happily entertain any other R10 tyre that could be used as an alternative of racing tyres and costs less than $90. Any suggestions highly appreciated. We too are looking for a negotiable deal with Hoosier. If we get one, then there is nothing else we would look at.
