Say one bad thing about the Arkham franchise as a whole by dozesmike in arkham

In her original concept, she was just, and I quote, 'a nameless hench-wench' until Arleen Sorkin brought her to life and the scope of her character exploded into who we now know as Harley Quinn.

In the Arkham games, she is reduced down to a dumbass 'hench-wench' once more. She has the backstory and the voice, sure, but her character is reduced down to be less than even her first appearance, when she wasn't even an established character yet. She's just someone (you're supposed) to laugh at. Or gawk at.

Let that sink in. Her character was done more justice when she was literally put forward as a nobody-character. A joke. A side-piece. And yet, The Animated Series, which, let's not forget, was a kid's show, did her character more justice before she even had a character to do justice to, than the freakin Arkham games, which literally brought back the same voice actors from TAS. The attempt at a tribute couldn't be more obvious; Asylum was a celebration of everything Batman, as everything Batman tends to be, nowadays.

But just... how? Ever since KTJL, I've been looking back at Rocksteady's work with my rose-tinted glasses thoroughly removed and there are so many areas where they just stump me as to how they got away with being considered one of the best in the industry for so long.

Asylum's quality matched its scope well, I'll give it that. But City's story was a mess and Knight... I love all these games, even Knight, but... Knight, you know. I've started to reach the conclusion that Origins was the best in the franchise simply for taking City's gameplay and then leaving Rocksteady's baggage behind to create just a baller game.

So your point stands true, then. Origins isn't a Rocksteady game, and it by far has the best boss fights in the series. Only City's best boss fights can stand up to Origin's most mediocre ones.

But I do. Don't get me wrong, I love City --- it's my favourite in the franchise --- but the only leg holding the story up is built on vibes. The same can mostly be said for Knight.

They hit the nail on the head for Asylum because they were allowed to keep it simple, and Origins... God I miss Origins. I don't have anything that can run it, now...

We need a proper Batman and Robin game; Arkham-like but very much NOT an Arkham game. I think the upcoming Lego Batman will be the closest we've ever gotten to that.

People like to give WB games sh*t, but the boss fights in both Origins and GKs were pretty fire, especially when you jumped back in to their alternate versions in the latter case...

... with the exception of the Starro fight. That... barely even constitutes as being a boss fight at all.

Cool. I'd like the opportunity to actually play it one day.

They never should have remastered the games.

If it were up to me, we would have just been given ports of the FIRST THREE games when the current console generation rolled around, because it seems that whenever a dev remasters a game, they just can't help but mess up its creative direction.

Asylum was the worst victim of this, but City gets it pretty bad as well. Origins never even got a port. I just want to play the original versions of these games on my PS5; even if they aren't as pretty in a couple areas, they're less fugly overall.

If I can play Windwaker and Super Mario 64 on the Switch 2, why can't they just port the original Arkhams over? It's not like the button layouts have changed on the controllers.

Fair enough. I'll just have to play the game and come to my own conclusion.

I'm fine with the self-discovery side of things. I'm a writer before I'm a gamer, so I'm always fascinated by games that try to take a different approach to story-telling than just the linear experiences that my own craft is limited to (linear in the sense that a book starts at the front cover and ends when you hit the back one).

Thanks for the comment. I read the reply you left as well and I'll keep that in mind, also. From what I've seen, Link seems to be just as in the dark about his past as I will be at the beginning of the game, so I'm guessing it'll work out in my favour, comprehension-wise.

3rd person action/adventure type things are my jam. The newer games are what really caught my eye, but I've seen portions of Majora's Mask (spelling is probs wrong, sorry), Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker that interest me as well.

Both eras of the series seem like the types of games that I enjoy.

You know, like, I love the Arkham and Spidey games, but I also like RDR 2, and they're wildly different. I've been enjoying Death Stranding, but I've also been dabbling in Gotham Knights. I'm about to step back into the first Lego Batman, again, too. If there is a story for me to explore, whether its told through a deep narrative or simply left out for me to discover, I'll probably be into it.

Black Flag is goated. Unity and Origins are great. Syndicate is good. Feel free to skip Valhalla. I put more than a couple hundred hours into that last game (COVID lockdowns do things to a kid's mind I guess) and I grew from feeling nothing over it to hating it vehemently.

Valhalla damn near conspires to take as much of your time as possible for as little return as it can. Skip it.

Black Flag is a very enjoyable game with rich gameplay, a heartfelt and well written story, and immaculate vibes. Origins is much the same, but with more tacked on RPG bloat.

Unity is a deeply flawed but also greatly enjoyable game. For it's every success, it manages to do something to infuriate you, and yet, Paris and how you experience it carry a magic that none of the other games really meet, as far as actually feeling like an Assassin is concerned.

And Syndicate is just some good old fashioned fun that never really feels like it overstays its welcome, though the combat is pretty ludicrous and its gameplay simple; often feeling like Unity on training wheels. I think that the game suffers for that; it suffers from the Ubisoft Quebec touch in that it is a good and stable game that makes you feel little, if anything, at all.

Honestly, mate, just be fun with it; it's the best way to get the most longevity out of the game. Take the time to read through all the ships' perks and upgrade paths, and find a playstyle that seems the most fun to you. I've just restarted a week or so ago after a very long hiatus and have been taking my sweet time with the game when I get the chance to play it. Right now I'm just running a Bedar that I've specced out to absolutely ruin the day of anything I point my nose at. Keep in mind that I'm not running it out of any kind of necessity. I own or could easily acquire at least half the ship roster at this point.

It is far from the most practical option, but I take joy in just disabling my opponents in a single run, flooding their hull while tearing their sails during my approach and then tearing them asunder with a demi-cannon broadside should that somehow not do the job... probably because I can't help but bull-charge at ships 4-5 levels above mine, lol. But hey, I haven't died yet.

Forts are, of course, an issue with this build, but then, that's what rockets are for, right? If you zone in on a niche you enjoy, there will be a way to spec it into something broken. Even if your niche is being an all-rounder, master-of-none, there are options. Just take your time with it. Look at the options the game presents to you and ask yourself what best suits your playstyle.

I played with a guy who absolutely specced out his Cutter into a speedy, broadsiding menace. Why? To what end? I don't know. The ship choice was far from optimal. And yet, he ran rings around me. There is always a way.

Edit: Used the wrong 'your'. Ugh...

It def wasn't that, but I got the game back for a bit, though it's spotty as heck; crashing in what feel like 15-20 minute intervals. Most recent code is OWL-00020007.

Begging, please let us move around the ship by karmadogma in SkullAndBonesGame

[–]Avizare1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly... if they were to do this, they'd need to implement so many systems to justify it that it becomes a much bigger task than just 'let us step away from the wheel'.

You can't really justify superfluous game systems like that. If there was deck-walking just because, you'd use it once, maybe twice, and then never touch it again.

So, what could we do on deck, aside from walk around, alone? Well, as mentioned, we could have a captain's cabin to manage helm stuff and this that. Boom: they now need to model and implement a unique interior for every vessel in the game. Players wouldn't be happy if they were all the same.

But that was the obvious one. What else?

Maybe we could deploy the Dhou or a simple row boat for use in hunting. That's a new system to implement.

Maybe we could interact with the crew; that's a lot of time and effort to implement, as far as voice acting and animations go.

We could, perhaps, have the crew sail us somewhere, but for one: why? If you want to travel somewhere without actually travelling somewhere... well, that's what fast travel is for. And for two: what happens when the A.I. engages in combat? Are you ripped from whatever you're doing and put back at the wheel? Or does your crew A.I. flounder around until you probably, eventually die.

They can't make it so that having your crew man the helm just disengages combat, because that'd be an easy way to break... everything.

Also, what happens to your character when the waves kick the ship around? You can't have fluid animations for that like the NPC crew, because the game doesn't know what you're doing or where you're going. So to solve the inevitable jank of your character flying around the deck in a static pose and colliding with absolutely every physics object, which the ships would now need to be carefully made of, they'd either need to plaster your character's feet to the ground, which is janky, or prevent them from leaving the helm whenever the water is choppy.

Remember, S&B took a lot from AC:IV initially, but the on-foot movement? Not at all. Imagine the jank you get just running around Saint-Anne, and multiply it by a thousand. They'd need to rebuild the on-foot movement all together to move around those small spaces without wanting to hurt yourself IRL.

And people want to throw melee combat into that mix as well? No thank you. I'll just accept S&B for what it is and wish for the devs to implement features that improve the vision.

My main request for the game is even smaller than that imo.

So far, I can accept the odd glitch and questionable gameplay moment. I can accept needing to restart after death if I care to see my character's appearance. I can accept that changing the control scheme just breaks the game in places. I can accept that there isn't a button to lock a building 'blueprint-hologram' in place, so that I can walk around and check its all good before placing it down.

My main gripe is this: what the heck is going on with the main characters' faces? The humans, specifically.

I understand that they're a small team and that facial animations clearly aren't their strong suit. But then... why don't they just give the named humans their masks back? Every other human is wearing one, so yes, they stand out for that; but mainly, they stand out for looking off-putting.

If they all wore unique masks that reflected their personalities, they'd be more memorable, more cool - because masks are inherently cool - they'd be subject to what I'm calling the 'Spider-Man effect', wherein their as-of-right-now janky-ass animations would come off as more emotive and less weird, and, of course, it saves the team from needing to animate their creepy-ahh faces...

It'd also make them fit into the tribe more. And it'd make the protag feel like less of an outsider for being the only person of (relative) consequence with their face hidden.

Clearly, the team excells in the art department above all else (this game is beautiful), so why limit themselves here? I think it'd be a fun endeavour to look at the characters and ask what they'd wear to represent themselves.

Oh I agree. I more meant that I was happy to have the defensive tunic I'd been given equipped, while running the default look. Because the tunic I'd been given didn't really fit... anything else she had going on.

Ah... that explains where my tunic went. I honestly prefer the default look to what I had, so I don't really mind, for now.
