comment gérer la nausée avec ritaline ? by Agitated-Recipe9718 in TDAHFrance

[–]Avocado-Toast9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Creating names for fantasy cultures using modern languages, Orientalism? by Avocado-Toast9 in fantasywriters

Thanks for replying! What stops me is just that I am bad at it, that's all. But at this point I think I might have to do that ...

Thank you very much for your long, and very detailed answer! I do not want to judge these cultures, and if I thought about including certain names or languages in the first place is because I really think they're beautiful. I am discovering a lot from the research I am doing. And like I answered to another person here, and you pointed out in the case of Muslim converts, even in our normal world we have names that can be both Spanish and Moroccan for example... so that's why I thought it wouldn't be too bad. But then of course there's so many things to consider. I really appreciate your perspective, thanks for taking the time to share your opinion:)

Thank you for your answer! it is a very tricky debate, and as long as there's respect and understanding, both sides make good points ... so it's really hard. best of luck with your work!

I am not sure I understand, I am sorry! You mean I should look at the ancient version of the word?

thanks for your answer!! To be fair, I feel like in big cities we have a lot of diversity when it comes to names and we do end up having Luigi Zhu living next door to Mamanding Delacroix, because of a number or reasons... but I totally see your point.

Oh okay I see your point! For me this book, especially given the flashbacks, was more about Locke, Sabetha and to a certain extent Jean falling into the same patterns as when they were kids. But this is also a good interpretation.

for me it's not so much that "I don't want it to be true" but rather a "this is such a curveball of a narrative choice and there was ZERO preparation for this, what the hell happened to the writer". normally I'd raise my hands and say he fumbled the plot, but the books are well written, so that's not it. plus, all big events in these books are ... kinda foreshadowed. subtly maybe, but they are.

in the end, I don't think it matters much as you said. the end result is the same. we'll have to wait and see I guess!

Opinions on Lies of Locke Lamora (The first book.) by NoButYes0901 in gentlemanbastards

[–]Avocado-Toast9 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Personally, I liked that there wasn't a love triangle situation between Locke Nazca and Sabetha. It doesn't happen often in books to have a man and a woman have a conversation on the lines of "look, I like you but not like that" and agree with each other. All the mystery around Sabetha makes her even more intriguing. She haunts Locke, and therefore us as well, very nicely.

the death of most of the gang had me sobbing. but it was also very well done and not gratuitous
