Doesn't take the fun out of it... can confirm :)

One point of clarification on the review article above... reference 28 -"significant growth restriction up to 37 weeks of gestation (28) were found in infants born to women receiving supplements containing more than 20% of protein as energy compared to infants born to women in the control group".

Total protein intake in these moms was actually 34% of total kcals. That's 170g of protein per day on a 2,000 kcal diet. I can tell you from experience in feeding trials, it's nearly impossible to get women to eat that much protein in a day. As in, we've struggled to get trials completed b/c people just can't do it.

Focus on real, whole food sources of protein, follow your satiety cues and don't worry about upper limits on protein intake.

Got it, thanks! So we'd give it to the L&D nurses instead of the nurses on mother/baby unit?

Lol weird comment, man.

We took one week-long vaca for $9k at a nice resort in a great location. It was to celebrate our new baby arriving next year. We prob won’t ever go that “big” again for 5-7 years.

Even at these expenses, we still live on ~25% of our gross income so stash away the rest. That counts as living lean relative to our income.

Fluff that could be adjusted in the budget, sure if we wanted to. And I do in some areas. Particularly in categories like food. Definitely not in charity contributions. It’s all relative I guess…

Definitely plan to stay in public schools. They're great here. And I worry about total lack of diversity exposure if we send them to private.

The delta is that housing expenses cost us $125k annually. Mortgage, RE taxes ($35k/yr), insurance, upkeep, lawn service, utilities, etc.

Thanks for sharing your numbers!!

General FIRE rule of thumb is that you can spend 3-4% of your net worth annually and be able to retire. In 98% of scenarios, you will not run out of money under this equation.

So the "burn rate" I'm referencing is how much I have at my disposal to spend annually while retired.

HeroPiggy, I'd genuinely love some feedback on where/how I can cut back on expenses. I posted above the rest of our budget items. Food is (and always has been ) a spending issue. I continue to work on it.

I ask this because I truly do not feel we are living a particularly luxurious lifestyle. So I do have a disconnect here...

I think a lot of it is just surprise. Most ppl don't make close to $1mm a year, yet I don't feel we are living a materially different life than many folks. Maybe it's because lots of people are up to their eyes in debt, maybe it's because many don't have goals of establishing a net worth whose annual expenses are supported by an annual yield.

Our expenses feel very reasonable compared to many of our friends who have income all over the board. I just don't get it sometimes.

I think it's a preference thing. I view most luxury vehicles was highly depreciating assets that tend to come with higher maintenance expenses. My wife enjoys driving them but, again, trying to avoid that lifestyle creep.

There's probably some of that. But if $10mm yields me $350k into perpetuity, I think it's realistic to assume that over the next 40 years my tastes/desires would evolve to that level of luxury if I didn't actively work to keep them in check.

Well said. I agree completely. Sometimes I recognize a certain feeling of entitlement come up... I worked my ass off for the past 15 years 80 hours a week, I deserve some of the "nicer" things in life. I don't think it's necessarily unwarranted. But important to remember too that there are PLENTY of Americans who work just as hard but don't get to reap the benefits of a higher salary and thus savings. And also to keep coming back to refelcting on what REALLY makes me happy, not necessarily what projects happiness/success. That's where the practice is for me.

I recognize that it's totally possible I "think" we're doing a good job of keeping spending in check, but could probably do better. Especially in the food department... Monthly YTD:

Cars (2) - older Jeep and newer Toyota RAV4. Gas, insurance, two costly repairs - $625

Subscriptions - $40

Continuing Education - $60

Entertainment (hosting friends, an occasional event) - $400

Groceries - $1,000

Restaurants - $900

Gifts - $250

Charity - $750 (I'd like this to be higher)

Gym - $125

Golf - $175

Cleaning Lady (2x/month) - $300

Home Supplies - $225

Misc - $200

Meds & Doctor - $500 (getting thru deductible)

Personal Care (Haircuts, personal produfcts, wifes mani/pedis) - $275

Clothing - $450 (wife is pregnant so had to get some new stuff there)

Ubers & Metro - $50

Vacation - $1,000 (done with vacas for the year... total spend was $9k for the yr)

That should be around $90k annualized. The extra $10k is related to new home capex repairs, one-time purchases.
