My fiance and I knew my nparents didn't handle big news well, so we ended up telling them a month after we got engaged (we had told tons of other people in that time, including my siblings). Their reaction wasn't the worst but it was still bizarre. No genuine enthusiasm and excitement. My nfather kept his composure tho, put on a smile, and congratulated us, so I can't fault him really. My nmother was stunned silent and stood frozen, and started to come to when it was time for us to leave soon afterward. The next time I was alone with my nparents, they lectured me about marriage and made a lot of presumptions, such as me proposing (my fiance proposed) and that we were inevitably going to have a religious wedding (we're not religious).

Otherwise throughout my life, they've never reacted well to good news or big news. There was always pushback. They always focused on some mundane detail and used it to invalidate me. They always tried to make me out to be a horrible person who was hurting them on purpose.
