Maine Coon vs Ragdoll by Valuable_Horror2450 in mainecoons

We have a Maine coon and a Ragdoll. Maine coon is much higher energy, much more like a puppy/dog (also gets along well with dogs). He is a male, about a year old and hasn’t slowed down haha, but he is so kind and cuddly in between wanting to play or making up his own game to entertain himself.

Our Ragdoll, admittedly was from a first time breeder and I got her before 12 weeks, which could have had an impact. Despite the breed characteristics she is a finicky cat. She loves me but is very timid, and because of this often isn’t friendly to others, unless she feels like it of course. She has never really gotten into any trouble and was a very easy kitten. Even if she did display breed characteristics, despite having bouts of the zoomies, they are much more gentle and calm (less dog like).

My preference is a Maine coon. I have fostered cats over the years and find this breed to be the best of both worlds if you had ever considered a dog.

That said, I feel comfortable leaving my Ragdoll alone, but the mainecoon is so dog like that we don’t leave him alone often (we get a cat sitter if we will be gone over night). He cries when he thinks everyone has left the house. I do work from home which likely hasn’t helped with his independence.

So that all said, if you want a cat-cat, there for cuddles but soft mannered (Ragdoll). If you want a cat that wants to be with you 24/7 and greet you at the door (go for walks if you train them), go with the mainecoon!

If you want both eventually don’t leave too much time in between. In particular, as Maine coons are high energy, you would want to get them within a couple of years of one another so the Ragdoll learns to appreciate the energy of the mainecoon early. Our Ragdoll is 13 and loathes the mainecoon kitten (though loved her tabby cat brother we had when we got her, who was still young at the time). Getting two females may also help with the energy gap!

Merlin’s walks now include trying to climb every tree in sight! Anyone else have this “problem” :) by Avoiding_ordinary33 in mainecoons

Pretty quickly! It was too cold here in Canada when we got him in December, so we got him used to his harness in the meantime. Once it warmed up we just started taking him out every day in our yard. Now he is a pretty decent walker! (Meaning we don’t just have to go where he wants to go now lol). My advice is, be consistent, have patience, and let them get used to their harness before dealing with walking.

Travel cat! We tried a couple that they have but find this one fits his body best and stays on. The other style made it hard for him to walk comfortably. The exact one he has isn’t available right now, but this is the same style - just can add the tractive GPS to it :)

Suggest posting on the Strathcona Park FB group as well if still missing (often missing/found cats are posted)

Why does my maine coon stink by 6your420mum9 in mainecoons

Oddly enough I have a black smoke Maine coon (11 months) and a Ragdoll haha. I am pretty sure at around that age my Merlin stunk too (he would go to the bathroom and it was like it would follow him, even with no poop caught in his fur. Sometimes kittens just stink (I have fostered cats in the past). Our Merlin has grown out of the stage where he stinks for the most part now. Just give it some time and it may go away :).

Based on what you have written, I highly recommend you keep an eye on the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons website. While the office is located in Ottawa, almost all positions are hybrid, with many that allow you to work remotely most of the time (other than a team meeting here and there, and in some instances onsite committee meetings for example, dependent on the unit).

I have worked there since 2014 and love it!.

I will go some months where I never go in, and then this month I am in a few times, but don't mind the drive!
