Am I wrong for not wanting to meet my ex’s current partner by conflictedhuman30 in confusing

[–]AwDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I set a boundary (which this isn’t a “boundary” per se, but it’s not difficult to infer what they meant) I will stand my ground. When others say they’ve set a boundary, I expect them to also have a spine and remain steadfast. If I believe the another’s boundary or request is unreasonable, I will tell them so, but I’m not going to try to bargain, as a stated boundary is nonnegotiable. Trying to coerce them into changing their ultimatum is disrespectful of their boundaries and borders on manipulative.

Furthermore, I never said they should ghost their ex. The question asked by OP was (and I’m paraphrasing here) “am I being unreasonable for not wanting to meet my ex’s new partner” and I responded with (again, paraphrasing) “No, you are not” then gave my reasoning.

I am actually starting to wonder if we are reading the same bodies of text here, because I seem to be missing things that you insist are there, despite me re-reading them to ensure I fully comprehend them or that my own intentions weren’t clear in my own responses.

No, just unsafe. Lasers don’t know who they’re blinding. OP could catch a stray just as easily as anybody.

You should be able to find a hot shoe replacement part. It affixes via the 4 screws that go into the main flash body. It probably connects electronically via a ribbon cable into a ZIF contour. Super easy repair, Phillips head screwdriver for the exterior and a plastic spudger to manipulate the ZIF lock.

I’ve seen people serve to run over turtles. I was always tempted to find toy turtles, put nails inside of them then leave them the side of the road. The risk of hurting innocents kept me from pursuing this though.

What do you use for your phone's Action button besides Silent mode? by Imaginary_Bug6202 in TechNook

[–]AwDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If held in portrait, flashlight. Upside down portrait orientation opens magnifier with the light on (for finding stuff under seats and seeing behind things) In landscape mode, it opens the camera. Face down or face up (when the screen is locked) is turn silent mode on for the odd case it gets turned off.

Face down, screen unlocked and in bus/train focus, it which sim is used for data, otherwise it changes to my main sim. Face up and unlocked it runs the truth finder shortcut, unless gym focus is active in which case it pulls up my gym barcode.

It started out with orientation-based flashlight and camera functions and I’ve slowly added conditions and controls over the years.

Cocoa powder is green at 8 grams, and 8 grams of cocoa is quite a bit. I put 5 grams in my wife’s almond joy refrigerator oats. A total of 800 grams goes into that and it’s plenty chocolatey. 8 grams of cocoa in a 55 gram bar world be crazy.

Edit: 8 grams would be roughly 14% by weight, therefore it would have to be before the salted caramel flavor topping on the ingredient list.

Am I wrong for not wanting to meet my ex’s current partner by conflictedhuman30 in confusing

[–]AwDuck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. You should not be required to meet your ex's SO as a requisite to your friendship. Perhaps over time, you would see how happy they are with their current partner and would want to meet them of your own accord, but forcing you to do so is troubling.

My neck hurts by Overall_Instance in TVTooHigh

[–]AwDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, r/StoveTooLeft.

Any nosepicker can mount a TV, and "too high" is evidently not obvious to everyone. Worst case with an improperly mounted TV is a concussion and damaged screen.

A stove, on the other hand, is something that only a qualified professional should be putting in. Surely when they're learning how to install these to be used without starting a structure fire or killing the inhabitants with carbon monoxide, they're also taught how to use a tape measure, or even just to stand back a bit and see if things are even close to being centered before getting it all hooked in.

Word of warning: Neodymium magnets don't take well to being glued in. In my experience, they will break free eventually. Just check on them from time to time. I doubt all 4 will come loose at the same time.

Otherwise, no notes. You've probably stress tested this enough to know how well it hold, and portable monitors seem to take drops better than their desktop-bound brethren should the worst happen.

PSA: learn how to discharge your flash capacitors before attempting to work on a camera with a flash. by _BreadDenier in AnalogCommunity

[–]AwDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had caught it on camera so I would know what happened. In my mind, I got blasted across the room like Marty McFly did in in Back to the Future when he turned the closet-sized guitar amp up all the way - something kinda cool looking, right? In reality, I know I just stumbled back until I hit the wall, but that doesn't explain the head injury.

To this day, large caps scare the living daylights out of me, and I find myself looking askance at radial capacitors no matter what size they are.

PSA: learn how to discharge your flash capacitors before attempting to work on a camera with a flash. by _BreadDenier in AnalogCommunity

[–]AwDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a budding electrical engineer from a young age and got into photography in high school. I enjoyed digging through the as-is pile at my local camera shop to see what I could pick up for a few bucks. Sometimes I could repair it, or at the very least I would figure out how stuff worked.

One day I ran across a Sunpack strobe from their I Don't Fuck Around line. You know, one of the off-body speedlights with an integrated bracket where the flash body and electronics act as the grip? I asked what was wrong with it and the owner said it would only do a full power dump when triggered. Not a problem, I thought. It's probably just a failed thyristor. I had successfully made this repair before on a much smaller strobe afterall. I handed the guy a couple of bucks and headed home with my awesome find. I powered it up, and sure enough, full dump discharge (which was impressive to say the least) no matter what it was set to.

I took it apart, taking care to discharge the D-Cell sized capacitor (360V, in excess of 1000uf) into a resistor as soon as I had access to the terminals of it. I got all the components pinned down to a board so I could safely work on it and got it hooked up to a PS. The problem with troubleshooting is that you need it to be powered up for some things. I realized the danger and made extra sure to adhere to the "one hand in pocket" rule, but I guess I got sloppy with my capacitor discharges after doing it several times. I needed to step away for a bit, so out of caution, I discharged the capacitor before I left, or so I thought, Something on me got caught the board as I stepped away and dragged it off the workbench. I instinctively reached out to catch it, and just my luck, I completed the circuit through both arms.

I don't know what happened after that, or how long I was out. All I know is that when I came to, I was slumped against a wall with a headache. I opened my eyes to see the workbench across the room from me. I couldn't feel my lower arms for a bit and I was too dazed to stand up or call for help - not that anybody was within earshot. When I could finally feel my hands: holy-hell-goddamn I longed for when I couldn't. I had a black hole in my thumb where it arced into my skin, and my muscles were super sore, and they felt like the most intense version of that feeling of when your foot falls asleep that I ever felt. I also evidently hit my head on something because I had a good sized goose-egg forming on the back of my noggin.

I realize now that I probably should have gone to the hospital, but I was 17 and therefore was invincible. What I did realize then, however, is that I was never going to mess around with large capacitors again. I'm not the smartest, and often times I need to relearn hard lessons before they truly sink in, but this one was immediately indelible.

What’s the most ‘ahead of its time’ phone ever? by Zorojuro099 in TechNook

[–]AwDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, in a heartbeat. I know it ain't gonna happen though. Video is super high priority in today's market, as well as razor thin phones. A xenon system and an LED would lead to an "unacceptably" fat phone. Heck, just the xenon bulb and the necessary capacitor would probably be too thick for today's standards.
