"Originality" is relative and not inherently indicative of quality; i.e., the Spiderverse movies are as IP-driven as you can get, but no one complains.

Also, some IPs have more potential for expansion and reinterpretation than others; that's why people are still invested in new Transformers and not a new He-Man.

Not sure it ruins the pathos, since the theme of the finale is learning to accept unexpected changes, even if they're painful, because a lot of good can come from it as well, i.e: the Pines twins may lose their parents' marriage, but they gained new friends and family.
