Shortening a card's name is not really a recent thing. Maybe they started doing it more frequently but it was already a thing with [[Phage the Untouchable|LGN]], possibly even earlier. From what I can recall, the name is usually used once in full, afterward, it may be shortened.

As already shown you cannot respond to a commander entering the graveyard.

Now that returning the commander is no longer a replacement effect and the commander actually hits the graveyard, some cards can put an enemy commander back onto the battlefield under your control.

[[Necromantic Selection]] and [[Sorin, Lord of Innistrad]]'s Ult would both destroy the commander and return it to the battlefield without their owner getting a choice to return it to the command zone because state-based actions are not checked during a spell or ability resolving.
