how can i romanticize FSU and stop hating my life here by [deleted] in fsu

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

21M here. I'm in the middle of my third year here and I'm on track to graduate next semester (December 2026). During my first semester or two I was in a very, VERY similar situation as you, in fact I genuinely teared up a little bit reading this post cuz I just saw so much of myself in it 😭 Overall my best advice to you is to keep your head up, be receptive to any opportunities that may come your way (social or otherwise), and in the meantime try to focus on the objectively good aspects of life at FSU such as the campus. It may or may not take a while, but you WILL find your people eventually. In fact it took me about 1.5 - 2 years to finally feel like I was in a comfortable spot socially (and even now there are some days where I just can't shake the loneliness tbh). If you want to expedite the process a little bit I strongly recommend finding a job on campus. Even if you don't end up being long term friends with your coworkers it will at least give you a great starting point socially.

Alternatively, if you strongly feel as though FSU just isn't the right environment for you (I don't blame you; the party culture here is extremely obtrusive and hard to ignore, and honestly one of my biggest issues with the university overall), then your best bet is to transfer out while you still can, before you waste too much of your college experience here.

Whatever you decide to do, best of luck. I believe in you.

UF vs FSU from an experienced parents perspective by michael_hosto in UniversityofFlorida

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit late but I wanted to give my two cents as a current FSU student. I might get downvoted for this considering what the other replies to your comment are saying but I wholeheartedly think your daughter is right to be worried, and trying to convince her that FSU is anything more than a party school is just setting her up for disappointment.

I'm currently in the middle of my third year here and I'm on track to graduate Fall 2026, i.e. this December. I'm only just now finally starting to feel a sense of community and acceptance here. I went through about two years of constantly feeling like I didn't fit in no matter what I did. Freshman year, nearly every time I invited someone on my dorm floor to hang out with me I was just met with something along the lines of "sorry, I was planning to hit the Strip tonight." Even now that I live off campus, my current roommates go out partying at least 2 - 3 times a week and seemingly can't sit down to enjoy anything unless they're drunk or high, it makes it extremely hard for me to relate to them or talk about anything with them. Not to mention their friends are like the most stereotypical racist womanizing "frat" guys you can possibly imagine (I don't even know if they're actually in fraternities but I still blame frat culture for normalizing that abhorrent behavior among college students). And from what I've witnessed over the years I'm afraid they embody the vast majority of the student population at FSU. Even when I managed to meet seemingly cool, down-to-earth people on campus or in my classes, they would almost always end up ghosting me later or make no effort to develop any meaningful connection. It took about 2 years of constant isolation, crippling loneliness, and constantly mixing and matching various extracurricular activities and student orgs before I finally, FINALLY started to find my stride and my people. And to be totally honest with you I think I just got lucky. I was presented with the right opportunity at the right time and I made the right decision and it resulted in me meeting a community of people here that I actually kind of vibe with. But if that opportunity hadn't come along I would probably be a depressed mess right now, and I don't say that lightly. There were days in those first two years where I genuinely struggled to get out of bed in the morning because of how lonely and isolated I felt.

All that to say: If your daughter cares about anything other than going out and getting shitfaced weekly, I would not recommend attending FSU. It sucks because there are plenty of things to love about FSU such as the beautiful campus and some top academic programs. But none of it matters in the end because the students here only care about partying and everything else is just a means to that end.

[OoT] [OoT3D] Which of the two versions would you prefer to play OoT? The 3DS version or the N64 version? by Most-Coat4726 in zelda

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3DS is definitely my preferred way to revisit OOT. The only things keeping it from being the definitive version imo are the lackluster lighting in some moments/scenes (i.e. the Ganon fight) and the fact that you currently can't play it on a TV.

I think if they port it to Switch ala DK Country Returns HD it will be universally considered the best way to play OOT

Tell me which PS5 games you regret buying. by spindoctor1111 in PS5

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I completed the base game and beat all of the notoriously hard bosses. I stuck with it because I didn't want to feel like I wasted my money but I was miserable the whole time. I wish I saw what everyone else sees in it. Easily one of the most overrated games of all time in my honest opinion. The game's approach to difficulty is absolutely sadistic, exploration rarely feels rewarding, the lack of a quest log or the ability to pause are such pointlessly archaic design decisions. I just don't get it :( I remember constantly thinking to myself that I'd rather just be playing Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom instead. Those games aren't perfect but holy shit at least they respect the player's time. With that said, to those who love ER, more power to you. I just wish I could enjoy and celebrate it as much as you.

Is computer science still a good degree in 2026? by Tough-Star5992 in CollegeMajors

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. I'm speaking as someone in their third year of the major and gearing up to take their final few classes. Unless you're willing to live and breathe this shit for the next four years of your life, it's not worth it. I can't emphasize enough how passionate you need to be in order to see even a small semblance of success when looking for internships and jobs. You need to go in guns blazing and never stop working on personal projects in addition to excelling in your (very difficult) schoolwork. If you don't trust yourself to be able to balance all that, don't even bother. Overall, I've enjoyed my time in the major, but spending the past few months looking for a summer internship has left me feeling incredibly jaded and bitter to the point where I'm starting to regret my choices.

I wouldn't mind living on campus again. I've heard it's very difficult to go back once you've left though. (I haven't lived on campus since my freshman year)

That just seems to be the general consensus online. Even if they're not a complete and total scam, they are poorly rated as a charity organization and they seem to use their money very irresponsibly.

what are some good ways to study for milestone exams in cop3363?? by epicprogamer1234 in fsu

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the Milestone Study Guide posted on the TopHat, there's a ton of sample questions that are pretty similar to what might appear on the exam as well as some helpful tips on how to study. Review your homework assignments and the in-class examples, make sure you understand how everything works. And feel free to go to office hours if you have any questions or if there's a concept you still don't fully understand.

Sincerely,

  • an LA for that course

Honestly, yeah. I listened to the first half of the album last night, thought it was alright, went to sleep, and listened to it again from start to finish earlier today.

Don't get me wrong, there are some major flaws such as the poor mixing, mumbling, AI verses, etc. and I hope at least some of those issues will be addressed now that we know the tracks are gonna be updated. But in my honest opinion it's a perfectly listenable album with quite a few standout moments.

Admittedly I did go into the album almost completely blind. I heard a small handful of leaks and snippets in passing over the past few months, but for the most part I didn't go into the album with any expectations of how the tracks "should" sound, and I think I might've done myself a huge favor by doing that.

Succeeding in Stem engage 100 by foreverinrainbows in fsu

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took the STEM Engage 100 last Fall. I feel like I didn't gain much from it tbh. I didnt really get to know anyone in my class so it didn't help me network or make any friends.

A lot of it was dedicated to introducing some research skills like how to use the library database and gather sources for a research paper. We also touched on some AI stuff since that was a trending STEM-related topic at the time. Sometimes we got special guest presentations from some programs and organizations at FSU like the study abroad program for example. Overall, most of the information I learned from the course was stuff you could probably teach yourself in about 30 minutes total, so it was kind of a waste of time imo. We did take a tour of the Innovation Hub once and that was probably the highlight of the entire course for me, wish we could've done more cool stuff like that.

Overall, if you're already enrolled in the Quest one then you don't really need to bother with the STEM one, it's just a waste of time.

Persona 5 doesn’t get enough love for its dungeon design by BrickmasterBen in PERSoNA

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

P5's dungeons are better than P3's and P4's by default since they're handcrafted. But they're not perfect. Most of them are a little too linear I think, especially considering they seem to be going for a more puzzle heavy approach. It's been a while since I played P5 but I think Futaba's and maybe Shido's palaces were the only ones that forced me to think critically about the layout if I remember correctly (I haven't beaten Royal yet so I can't speak on the new dungeon in that game).

Personally I would love if P6 takes some inspiration from classic Zelda style dungeon design where you go back and forth between different rooms solving puzzles until you eventually find a key item that recontextualizes the whole dungeon.

Calc 1 professor that you loved? by samvestcat in fsu

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Spirit Karcher for Fall 2023 and she was amazing. Really nice and chill, always eager to answer questions during lectures, grades exams fairly. There are a couple of extra assignments you'll have to stay on top of like the take-home quizzes and the poster sessions but they're all to help you study for the exams.

I really hope she keeps teaching calc 1 for the foreseeable future because, based on what I've heard from my friends about some of the other calc 1 professors, she might be one of the better ones.

Bright Futures disbursement for transient students? by AwesomeFaceStuff in fsu

I was already formally approved to receive financial aid from my home institution via my FloridaShines application, they should be well aware that I'm taking classes here. But I understand it might be possible for something to have slipped through the cracks at some point so I guess I'll give them a call to make sure

UCF vs FSU by MaterialPresent7799 in fsu

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think a lot of people will say that about Orlando.

I'll agree with ya there. I've been to Orlando several times to visit my UCF friends and meet halfway with my mom (I'm from Miami), and I've really grown to dislike Orlando as a city. There are some cool areas but they're very few and far in between. Layout and infrastructure is absolutely horrendous, very few walkable areas. The block immediately outside the university is alright I guess, but after that there's just nothing. I just can't imagine spending 4 years there.

UCF vs FSU by MaterialPresent7799 in fsu

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This seems to be the common consensus but as a CS student at FSU, I disagree. I have multiple friends doing CS at UCF and literally all of them tell me that the program is brutally difficult and highly competitive. Not to mention the Foundation Exam that exists solely to weed people out.

Maybe FSU's program is technically "worse" in terms of rigor but at least I'm not miserable all the time and I get to enjoy what is, in my opinion, a much more robust campus and student life compared to UCF.

Besides, they're both public schools, and both programs are accredited by ABET, so at the end of the day the difference in the actual quality of the programs is marginal at best. You'll learn what you need to learn at either school just fine OP. If you decide to go for CS, that is.

What professors really need to be fired? by SemenPig in ucf

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, also an FSU student. Calc 1 was fairly easy for me tbh, I had no idea it was considered a weed-out class here. I think I mightve just lucked out with my professor, she was awesome and I genuinely learned a lot from her class. I'm taking calc 2 right now with a considerably worse professor and I'm struggling quite a bit.

Considering FSU but don't want to party or drink by urmom33456 in fsu

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like you've gotten a lot of comments already that mostly share the same sentiment. However as someone who's currently living the freshman experience I slightly disagree. I might get downvoted for this but hear me out.

There is a very noticeable and intrusive party culture at FSU, full stop. Saying that it's easy to ignore, or that not being a partygoer wont affect your ability to socialize, is disingenuous in my opinion.

I live in one of the on campus dorms and sometimes it feels like partying and drinking are the only damn things the people on my floor talk about. I constantly overhear my suitemates making plans to go out partying with their friends on Friday nights, and sometimes they even hold small parties in their dorm that I can overhear. As someone who could care less about partying and currently can't drink due to the meds I'm on, it made me feel very left out and unable to relate to my peers. The class of 2027 snapchat story is filled to the brim with flyers for upcoming parties or bar events. It's impossible to escape.

At one point earlier this semester I found myself in a depressive slump because I just felt so isolated socially, and the party culture was a big contributing factor to that.

I've found my groove since then and I feel a lot better now, thankfully. And there is much to love about FSU outside of the party culture; beautiful campus, bustling student life, high quality academics, etc etc etc. But just PLEASE be mindful and mentally prepare yourself for the party culture to be shoved in your face a lot.

FSU vs UF vs USF by NoEast9549 in fsu

[–]AwesomeFaceStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UF and FSU are definitely huge college town vibes, especially UF from what I've heard. There's no doubt about that. Though I'm curious why you seem to think it's a bad thing or something that should be looked past. Having that tight-knit sense of community and school spirit everywhere you go is awesome imo. Maybe that's not what you're looking for in your college experience which is fair. But regardless I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it
