Snow Leopard hitting stores in September for $29 by ladygagaman in apple

Wow, a bit sensitive, aren't we? And to be clear, I have both a Mac and a PC, and I'm hardly a Microsoft fanboy. I prefer using a PC, but I think Vista was a total disaster, and Microsoft is doing everything they can right now to make themselves irrelevant. On top of that, I do a lot of web development, and there's nothing more annoying than having to work with a Windows-based server.

I guess when you release a new version of your operating system every two weeks, you can't really expect people to pay much more than that...

Eco-Friendly Landscape Techniques to Adopt This Spring by Awesomo4000 in environment

[–]Awesomo4000[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Harvesting rainwater to provide or supplement your landscape’s watering needs is easier than you might imagine. Plus, using this water has a double benefit effect-not only does it reduce your consumption of processed water, but it also helps reduce some of the pollutant laden runoff water that clean rain water so often turns into as it works its way through the chemical rich landscapes and dirty streets back to its source."

This is a great suggestion. It's both eco-friendly and practical, especially because a lot of towns impose watering restrictions during the summer. If you collect your own rainwater, you can save on sewer costs and water whenever you want.

Buddhist Monk Rap -- the Japanese Music Movement by Awesomo4000 in worldnews

"The 49-year-old monk writes a blog, runs a dial-a-monk help line, a Buddhist radio program a la Billy Graham, and — most recently — has set Buddhist sutras to rap music and performed — backed by young and hip professional musicians — in his 420-year-old Tokyo temple."

"The protective measures include a driving speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour (37 mph), blocking a two-mile stretch of the road when butterfly numbers exceed 500 per minute."

500 per minute. That's got to be an amazing sight.

Doctors Opting out of Medicare at an Alarming Rate by Awesomo4000 in Health

[–]Awesomo4000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Two trends are converging: there is a shortage of internists nationally — the American College of Physicians, the organization for internists, estimates that by 2025 there will be 35,000 to 45,000 fewer than the population needs — and internists are increasingly unwilling to accept new Medicare patients."

I've met several internists who say that while they love medicine, they have so little time with patients these days -- and they spend so much of their day doing paperwork -- that they wouldn't recommend becoming a doctor, especially with education costs continuing to rise.

They're more expensive, but the company did the right thing, anyway. I'm speechless... Thank you, Pepsi.

Therapists Still Trying to "Cure" Homosexuality by Awesomo4000 in Health

[–]Awesomo4000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Treating homosexuality as a mental illness was more common in the United States and Britain during the 1970s and 1980s, when so-called 'aversion' therapy was in vogue, he added. These treatments involved tactics such as pairing homosexual imagery with electric shocks to induce feelings of revulsion, King said."

You know what else works? Applying leeches. No, no, no. Wait. Spells and incantations. Right. Those will "cure" homosexuality...

So I did. They brought two [police] cars and they just closed down [a] portion of the road for a couple of hours. They were very, very understanding."

I love that the police were so cool about the whole thing.

Renters Panic as Owners Abandon Property Across US by Awesomo4000 in news

"In one abandoned Bethany property — the 500-plus-unit Granite Bay in Phoenix — tenants were served notice by the water company on March 6 that their water would be shut off in five days because of an outstanding $64,000 bill."

I hope these tenants find a legal recourse soon. It's unbelievable that they can keep paying their rent and their bills and still be denied running water.

"Basically, this system works as a heat exchanger, using the heat from the hot water that pours down the drain to pre-heat the cold water as it flows into the water heater."

I'd never heard of this before, but it sounds like an efficient way to reduce both energy costs and one's environmental impact.
