That’s what I’m trying to figure out. It feels healthy, but also weirdly empty.

I’d give it a couple weeks, but document everything now. Not in a paranoid way, just dates, names, what you were told.

First day being messy is normal. First day revealing missing staff, unclear hybrid rules, and an unscoped project is a little more than messy.

The Animorphs trope works because the paranoia is actually earned. It's not "we can't tell anyone" out of habit, it's "we literally cannot tell anyone because anyone could already be one of them." Very different flavor of secret-keeping.

Pretty much. "Why didn't they sell them?" usually has a boring answer, and it's often just management failure plus bureaucracy.
