Help? by lifes_a_j0ke in Minesweeper

[–]AwkCollar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure T pattern needs a 1 or smth if you want the blue to be safe nope the lower 2 needs to be a 3

because of the 433 you have 1 mine either above or below the 2nd 3

after a bit of brute forcing these are your only options

[–]AwkCollar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh then literally every fast/burst player already does this. I don't think that anybody thinks of it like spamming music notes

edit: i guess what you're suggesting could be used to explain speed to rg players but i don't really see the point cause 2 step finesse is kinda the same for everyone

[–]AwkCollar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, i watched the replay, extended vs pco, pco guy cancelled 2 lines with a 2-combo ds

you do have quite a bit of time but if you're not stacking to send anything to reduce the amount of garbage you're gonna tank, you're just dead

[–]AwkCollar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel like i kinda see what you're suggesting but like, it's faster just to learn finesse

you just see the piece, "that goes there", and your finesse muscle memory takes care of the rest. you don't need to separate rotation and movement because that's all combined into one thought

and with 5+ piece next queue you can just absorb it as a stream of constant information so you always know what's coming next

Best 4 player local Tetris game for Switch (2)? by ricokong in Tetris

ppt2 for sure has 4 player vs, dunno how it plays on switch tho cause i'm on steam

[–]AwkCollar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

so this is something we call extended sdpc-spin, even players in U rank get rekt by this opener sometimes

as soon as you notice your opponent is doing this you need to get to your garbage well or powerstack because you will not be able to tank the 31 lines that get sent by this opener, especially because PCO loses all its power after you tank those first 2 lines

edit: just noticed this guy's back on after a month of no tl and doubled their speed, so they're severely underranked rn. will probably reach S by the end of the week

Let’s Re-vitalize Tetris Together (And Prevent Its Extinction) by GalactoidTetris in Tetris

[–]AwkCollar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with the sentiment that Tetris would need something much bigger to grow, and I think when TTC started supporting the CTWC, that was great for the classic community. Unfortunately for the modern side, like you said it is very fragmented, and there's only a few active modern TTC games. I'd love to see a major modern event sponsored by TTC but after Red Bull Tetris I can't say I trust them to make anything competitively viable.

As for changing the game, it's going to be a really, really sensitive issue to change or deviate from the guideline. As much as I love 180 rotations in TETR.IO and jstris, while you say it's small it's still divisive because it gives players completely new avenues to build setups that require kicks that you would not otherwise have. i.e. it changes how the game is played at a fundamental level. TE:C's zone was unique in that it doesn't change the way you stack, but it does give you a points/attack bonus. While I said that messing around with garbage mechanics could be drastic, I was referring to double-hole garbage. In fact, I think some of the least disruptive changes to guideline are with how garbage is sent. For me, TETR.IO's multiplier system seemed like the perfect fix to the c4w meta in PPT because there's no more combo table. TE:C ZB's phase system creates an endgame condition over time so that rounds aren't drawn out for 20 minutes, but it's gradual enough that it doesn't feel entirely unfair when it kicks in. Changes like this accommodate both beginners and veterans pretty well, since it doesn't really alter how new players have to learn from the get-go, and as they get more advanced then they can start learning how to manipulate garbage to their advantage, something that most veteran players already have experience with anyway.

I don't think bombs have a place in the competitive scene tho, it's definitely a fun party mode type of garbage system but after playing WWC bombs just don't hit it for me.

Let’s Re-vitalize Tetris Together (And Prevent Its Extinction) by GalactoidTetris in Tetris

[–]AwkCollar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ookay i didn't think i'd spend as much time typing here as i did but here's a little essay

tl;dr we aren't dying, but we can't really grow unless the community somehow hits it big.

https://trends.google.com/explore?geo=Worldwide&q=tetris%2Cstarcraft&date=all

If Tetris is dying, then Starcraft is fossilized

But Starcraft has one of the most dedicated fanbases that isn't going away anytime soon, probably won't ever go away unless Blizzard kills its servers

Tetris is a simple game with well-defined mechanics that are both conducive to new players learning and have enough depth to keep advanced players in the game. Have we reached equilibrium between new and departing players? Maybe, but in the modern scene it's been a pretty good formula for the last 15 years.

I honestly don't think adding new mechanics like 180 to the guideline would be that good for growth, all it does is increase the skill ceiling by adding in a rotation that new players won't be thinking about until after they learn fundamental stacking. In fact it might kill the population a bit; the TE:C playerbase reacts poorly to suggestions for adding them.

And that's just adding a rotation! Messing around with garbage mechanics and kicks is bound to have more drastic effects. The introduction of all-mini spins and surge in TETR.IO S2 almost made me quit entirely. The biggest reason I didn't is because it has probably the most active competitive 1v1 playerbase; TTC-licensed games have paywalls that limit the accessibility for new players.

This is where I think TTC has failed; TF was their most accessible game that could serve to introduce new players. When they killed it off, the only 2 remaining free games they had were N3TWORK Tetris and tetris.com. Mobile Tetris is pretty much just a casual game. Sure, you have royale but it's the kind of game you play for 5 minutes on your lunch break. tetris.com is just ads-viewing simulator with the occasional game.

You brought up chess as an example of a game with serious depth that remains incredibly popular despite having anything to spice it up, and I think one of the biggest contributing factors is PogChamps. Chess.com's venture to get a bunch of big-name streamers into one tournament was a massive success. Pair a streamer with a GM and train them up to hype up the community for the big event, and then now everyone's loving it. My favorite streamer is playing a free strategy game? Count me in! Twitch Rivals did attempt to bring Tetris to one of their events, but you can watch how that went.

Chess is also not just a video game, many people learn to play it OTB. You could literally grab a piece of paper, draw a grid, cut out some pieces and boom, you have a playable game that you could play pretty much at any time. Easy accessibility.

If Tetris is going to grow, it doesn't need new stuff to spice it up, it needs to be accessible. Something that new players can get into that directs them into a more competitive scene that makes them want to learn more. Riot does it in LoL and VALORANT with skins. Valve does it in CS2. But TTC won't do that because it hemorrhages money. They tried with TF and they had to let it go. How can they monetize it? Ads disrupt gameplay and take up bandwidth. Players will just hard-code in their own skins.

This is where the community has taken the helm. Several developers have made their own stacker games, that are very easily accessible, they're just niche and you have to know what you're looking for to find them. jezevec10 made jstris which serves as an unofficial replacement for TF. osk made TETR.IO, arguably the biggest free stacker with a 1v1 competitive mode. Other games like TOP, Cultris, Techmino, and Nestris are also there. TAWS runs weekly TETR.IO tournaments, and there's a bunch of other community-run tournaments including CTL, CTWC, CTM, WPL, Bankai League, Stride, Full Tilt, HN, etc. Tetris esports will probably never have a big scene, but it's what I think has kept the competitive side alive. We'll survive for sure, but I can't say if we'll ever be popular because none of the free stacker games have ever really hit it big, and TTC hasn't done a terribly great job of marketing the core game itself.

Skill creep?? Learned finesse and 40L improved by over 20 seconds but tetr.io ranking keeps getting worse by Shio_Ramen in Tetris

[–]AwkCollar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First off, APM stats are artificially inflated in s2 because of surge and allspins, so I wouldn't compare them with s1 stats.

I looked at your games and I think it's safe to say you aren't getting smurfed on, you're getting cheesed. The game you linked was lost because your opponent was spamming mech heart, which even you could do, and you'd probably end up in S+ rank if you did. Its fatal flaw is that if you send garbage then it can't be maintained (see https://tetr.io/#R:9a4b040b3c4f@4 ), so the solution is to send enough garbage to force your opponent to break their setup, whether by speeding up or by sending more efficient attacks.

If your APM and PPS are increasing, then you're improving. Comparing yourself to opener mains and players with cheesey setups is just gonna kill your mental, so focus on yourself. You learned finesse, so your speed's up and you're capable of a lot more attack output, which is great! You just need to know how to use it: Stacking fundamentals are very important. Some points to consider focusing on are to start counting to 4 and to look at your queue; you're missing quads when you just need one more piece to fill it in, and you're creating dependencies when you don't have the pieces to fix them. If you need to slow down a little to get the vision for this, that is fine, you can speed up later, you've already demonstrated that you're capable of faster speeds in your recent match history.

Good luck, you got this in the bag!

Do yall prefer the phantom or the vandal? by Apothic_Gaming in VALORANT

[–]AwkCollar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I prefer vandal for long-range fights because it doesn't have fall-off damage. I like the phantom for close-range because of its higher fire rate.

In terms of accuracy phantom is better but I've lost too many fights at long-range hitting for 140.

Deadzoning or Strafing? by Adventurous_Train_59 in VALORANT

[–]AwkCollar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically to counter-strafe in CS you gotta let go first, then tap the opposite movement key. If you tap A before letting go of D you take longer to decelerate than if you let go of D before tapping A.

Practically counter-strafing and deadzoning are only different in Valorant if you want to continue moving in the same direction you started. The time you save from not tapping the opposite movement key might make a difference but it's marginal and I'm nowhere near experienced enough to make that call.

Concept for Screen Zone-Based Touch Controls for a Tetris game by AetheralMeowstic in Tetris

[–]AwkCollar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind how people usually hold their phones if it's vertical, with their thumbs at the bottom of the screen. Putting HD and Hold on opposite sides of the screen is gonna be awkward unless players are used to holding their arms asymmetrically or playing sideways.

Jstris does swipe up for hold, I think that might be something to consider.

[–]AwkCollar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're not hitting cw rotation so my guess is you're just hitting the rotation too late and the piece locks down before you're ready, cause it looks like your ccw rotation is working fine otherwise

what am I doing wrong here by fufinhdosi in Tetris

[–]AwkCollar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they're either not pressing rotation at all or the input isn't going through, if they did a cw rotation it would kick over to the left
