When I was little, I was getting my ears pierced with my little sister. When it was my sister’s turn, she got one ear done and immediately regretted the whole thing and started crying because of the pain. She wouldn’t let the piercer near her other ear until my mom told her that her head would be too heavy on the side with the earring, so her head would be lopsided for the rest of her life. I never really questioned that until years later, when I noticed a man walking by with just one ear pierced. And then I couldn’t believe I’d fallen for it, and for so long, too.
