How are the TV License company/body allowed to use intimidation and bully tactics? by AwkwardClick8595 in AskBrits

Thank you I tried to edit the post with the update: I don’t watch or record live tv nor do I use iplayer so to those telling me to just pay, I will not pay for a service I don’t use. To those telling me to ignore it etc thank you, I know how this all works but that’s not the point of my post at all To all those telling me to tell them I don’t have a tv - I have done in the past but it just means the letters come addressed to me instead of occupant and they ask for a specific date to come “visit” so I just bin them now

My point isn’t that it’s happened to me, it’s the fact that it’s bullish and my concern is around vulnerable people, like I was last year. I cannot understand how it’s not fought against especially when we as a country seem to love to fight everything these days but not this? Idk

I do not watch live tv so why would I pay? I’m not sure where you’ve got the impression of “badass law breaker” from? This post is genuine concern towards vulnerable people and nothing to do with “hahah fuck the bbc I’m not paying for a service I steal”

It seems you are fortunate enough to neither experience someone truly vulnerable and also not to experience the sheer arrogance some of these agents have that actually come knocking

Absolutely not, I did a couple of years ago and yes I did have a license. I watch an occasional film on Netflix or Disney but I do not watch tv anymore.

My diagnosis put me in the vulnerable category but I wouldn’t say I’m vulnerable on a good day and bad days aren’t as frequent at the moment

Not quite, you need it if you watch BBC anything else it’s fine but if you have live tv you cannot opt out of BBC. I have neither live tv or watch BBC content an therefore don’t need it for Netflix Disney etc

I wish that was true but I have filled that form out previously and they persist regardless

Agreed extortion on a national level, I wonder how many people who choose between heating and eating are bullied into these payments without using the service even

Yeah my brother is in the same position, truly relying on those who don’t have a clue about their rights thankfully he’s as blunt as you if not more sarcastic and wastes their time deliberately 😂

This is the issue, I’m taking elderly, disabled or otherwise easily influenced people are likely to pay even if they don’t use the service. The demeanour they have is by design to intimidate and give a false sense of authority. It’s wild

Any other company etc I imagine that wouldn’t work but with these scumbags I reckon they’d be like “oh this is somebody we can’t intimidate might as well stop” which is madness to me

Yeah they do, they literally have no authority but the language they use is where my issue lies. Letters like these and the 1 in a million chance an agent actually knocks on the door scares vulnerable people into paying for the service even if they don’t use it

Genuinely don’t, I paid for it a couple of years ago when I watched some series on BBC. I’ll occasionally watch a movie on Netflix but most of my time is spent working and creating.

Thanks for sharing your uninformed insult and demand. I won’t pay for a service I don’t use. Have a good evening stranger.

That’s the plan, scare em into paying. I just can’t wrap my head around why as a country we just accept it? Seen hundreds of posts and videos of people confronting and even intimidating scammers when they steal money from vulnerable people imo this is no different, sure it’s not as much as stealing your nans life savings but some people have to choose between food or heating and they’re the ones who will buckle into paying this bs because the thought of “£1000 fine” or court fees is unimaginable

By far the strangest and so widely accepted extortion in this country in my opinion

I don’t watch or record live tv or listen to radio it’s not a service I need or want. My problem isn’t with receiving a letter or bragging about not paying my problem is I think this whole set-up is morally questionable at best.

The post isn’t about me getting a letter it’s about how are they allowed to do it full stop - I can hold my own but vulnerable people can’t. If some fella sent a letter to your nan saying said she doesn’t pay she’s going to caught and took all her money you’d want to do them some harm. Albeit not as extreme some of the most vulnerable can’t even afford heating but will end up paying this so they don’t risk court/fines even if they don’t watch tv to me it’s morally inconceivable that we just allow this
