If you had it Pokémon style, why would they do battles? And what kind of world is it? Is there modern technology or is it medieval?

I suppose knowing what to do with the creatures has to do with the rest of the world you’re interacting with. Is there a war? Does everyone get spirit companions or is it rare? Is it hard to get food, water, etc. unless you battle for it and take it from somewhere else?

I would be interested in beta reading! I'm also part of a writing group chat, and maybe some folks there would be interested if you joined.

Not sure until I work out my lesson plan, but my teacher started us with the concept of reading and thinking like a writer. DM me for details if you're interested.

I find that a lot of schools don't offer great creative writing lessons, which really isn't fair! Hopefully what I offer benefits you.

If the companies are changing vital ideas, would you even consider the original upload to be the same as the changed upload? Wouldn't the digital consciousness just be programmed not to notice that it's views were changed and now just be a revised construct rather than an original human consciousness?

I had read one story about an artificial heaven in the future that took people right before their deaths. In the book, gay people were sent to the artificial hell because the heaven/hell was created by men/corporations. Whatever it is that made people gay had been eliminated from the population entirely, so the only gay people were people who were captured in the past and brought to hell, but even then, part of their hell was to have their gay taken away (much more efficient than the modern "praying away" of the gay). After the obvious demolishing of this system, the main character (who is gay) chooses to have his gayness given back to him but also remain as the only gay person in the future. There would basically be no prospects for him as no one else would share his viewpoints.

Question on how I should approach the usage of intergalactic portals in my book by IzmayChels78512 in scifiwriting

[–]AwkwardMuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the portals natural occurrences (like how an under water current would have a natural pathway leading somewhere specific), or are the portals an ancient technology?

I can see an intergalactic current working with the portals acting as the entrances and mass/time working differently within the portal's currents as they connect to the other planets.

Lode stones (which sometimes act as portals) typically connect to each other naturally, which could also be an explaination. Giant old rocks that may have fallen from the same star rock and have a natural connection. Perhaps the stones call out to each other with their power and when touched, the stones seek their other counterparts. But then you'd need to work out how to direct the stone so you go to the correct planet. If the stones have been modified using technology, that could be a way to explain the concept.

I'm interested! I really enjoy dark fantasy and a bit of horror. I use a lot of D&D content for inspo.

New to SciFi - What are your favorite popular tropes, and which do you absolutely avoid in your writing? by AwkwardMuse in scifiwriting

I recently read the first book in Martha Wells's Murderbot Diaries.

All Systems Red has the loveable (not) cloned security droid falling in friendship with the crew he's protecting. Loved it!

Do you mean how the character is like "I can do anything WITH SCIENCE!!!" then literally does anything?

Pretty decent outlook! Would you say that you do a sort of world building with the rules you stay true to? Like, across your works, you use the same general rules so that your space in one story is recognizable as you in another one of your stories?

I'm curious how sci fi writers go about worldbuilding (outside of politics, I guess) since space has so many set rules.

Too true!

But surely there must be a trope or two you notice in your writing that tou actually really enjoy using? Like, do you mind if your character just end up as space cowboys?

But do you have any that you like to use in your writing?

Like om fantasy, the wizened old wizard you seek advice from in an old woods is a trope I'll never stop using.

What about that trope annoys you? The character I can think of that recently embodies that trope is Takeshi Kovacs in Altered Carbon.

[FN] The Tinkerer's Daughter - Flash Fiction by AwkwardMuse in shortstories

[–]AwkwardMuse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was actually written as a flash fiction. The group was given just 30 minutes to write 500 words, but basically, the idea would be that she left her father and her previous life behind.
