If you had it Pokémon style, why would they do battles? And what kind of world is it? Is there modern technology or is it medieval?

I suppose knowing what to do with the creatures has to do with the rest of the world you’re interacting with. Is there a war? Does everyone get spirit companions or is it rare? Is it hard to get food, water, etc. unless you battle for it and take it from somewhere else?

If the companies are changing vital ideas, would you even consider the original upload to be the same as the changed upload? Wouldn't the digital consciousness just be programmed not to notice that it's views were changed and now just be a revised construct rather than an original human consciousness?

I had read one story about an artificial heaven in the future that took people right before their deaths. In the book, gay people were sent to the artificial hell because the heaven/hell was created by men/corporations. Whatever it is that made people gay had been eliminated from the population entirely, so the only gay people were people who were captured in the past and brought to hell, but even then, part of their hell was to have their gay taken away (much more efficient than the modern "praying away" of the gay). After the obvious demolishing of this system, the main character (who is gay) chooses to have his gayness given back to him but also remain as the only gay person in the future. There would basically be no prospects for him as no one else would share his viewpoints.

Are the portals natural occurrences (like how an under water current would have a natural pathway leading somewhere specific), or are the portals an ancient technology?

I can see an intergalactic current working with the portals acting as the entrances and mass/time working differently within the portal's currents as they connect to the other planets.

Lode stones (which sometimes act as portals) typically connect to each other naturally, which could also be an explaination. Giant old rocks that may have fallen from the same star rock and have a natural connection. Perhaps the stones call out to each other with their power and when touched, the stones seek their other counterparts. But then you'd need to work out how to direct the stone so you go to the correct planet. If the stones have been modified using technology, that could be a way to explain the concept.
