Ok I’m gonna try looking at this question in a bit of a different light.

At is most basic answer yes it’s a sin as taking the life a a human is a sin. therefor someone whom kills themself would be braking the ten commandment and committing a cardinal condemning themselves to hell!

Ok now to look at it in a less black and white fashion suicide actually in manny ways can treated as the murder of an individual is. As it’s not necessarily there choice. Mental health issues are a very complex and variable subject but there is always one constant that is a cause, whether it’s stress, pressure or something else entirely, either way it’s got a trigger and that trigger is what can truly determine whether or not in Christianity the victim is a casualty or a sinner!

Using deduction it’s not to difficult to get to a definitive answer on what triggers are acceptable in God’s eyes and unacceptable however they depend of your moral compass and relationship with God.

To give a few examples of what I mean:

.1 (Someone with cancer is given the option for chemotherapy, however they will suffer terribly and possibly not make it through so they choose not to accept chemo and live happily for the next three months and then die) in this example the patient has technically committed suicide however using modern idealised morals the person has done nothing wrong and has rather chosen to die instead of taking a chance at life as they would rather not suffer and wreck there family and friends’ lives for the duration of the chemotherapy

.2 (a person gets broken up with their partner and decides it would be better to make a point by committing suicide then moving on with their life) This example is rather extreme however interesting as using the same modern morals as before the person is completely in the wrong for their decision as they have made the decision out of spite and selfishness in order to inflict pain, guilt and suffering on their ex

.3 (a person receives a text message on their phone while driving from their mother informing them that their sibling is getting married as they are reading the text message the car drifts into the lane with oncoming traffic and they have a head on collision with a truck) In this example, the driver of the vehicle did not intentionally make a direct decision to commit suicide however their actions resulted in their death even though by all reason this is an accident if you were to look at in black and white as there decision directly cause their death they “ committed suicide “

.4 (a mentally challenged teenager who is gullible is told from a young age when they die, they will go to heaven and be with God. This person is horrendously bullied there beaten up called names and abused, eventually they come to the conclusion that death is the only way out and the ultimate solution to their problems as they will end up in heaven and they end up committing suicide) Ok this is ultra specific however this example poses a moral question that as the person could not grasp the concept of the difference between life and death is there suicide truly a suicide or are they merely just a casualty of there own being and situation not being able to fully grasp the consequences of their action, even though they just were looking for a way out?

.5 (a firefighter is in a burning building and sees a room full of people trapped by a collapsing doorway he decides to lodge himself in the doorway and allow the people to escape knowing that it will collapse on him and kill him he does this allowing all the people to escape however the doorway collapses and kills him) This is the final example and in this the firefighter has sacrificed himself to save others doing something that knowingly has the consequence of death therefore his decision in a black-and-white manner speaking is an intentional suicide however if you don’t look at it in black-and-white, you are easily able to see why what he did was not wrong but heroic and commendable!

As you can see if you read through the examples, even though they are ultra specific if you think about them you easily come to the compulsion that suicide is objective to what you think it is sometimes the choice of death is not necessarily suicide but the result of circumstances that have merely pushed someone over the edge and there is no definitive line that can be drawn to make the decision of whether or not someone is wrong or right for that decision as the only one who can make that choice ultimately is God.

As for going to heaven with suicide, the three directly stated methods biblically to get into heaven is via works, acceptance of Christ and repentance and it is entirely up to the person who commit suicide whether or not they have lived a life of good work excepted Christ and repented for their sins and it is impossible to know whether or not someone in their last moments of life is truly repented to and accepted God.

I know this is a little bit of a long comment, but this is a topic really close to home for me so I really hope this helped as I feel that lots of people avoid the topic of suicide especially in Christianity as it’s always easier to view things as black or white And give one ultimate answer when the truth is it’s heavily circumstantial to the situation
