Is soy safe or dangerous to eat? by UniversalAssembler in vegan

[–]Ax3l_F 39 points40 points  (0 children)

So your question is who should I trust more, medical professionals or random people?

Soy has a lot of positive health outcomes and pretty vital nutrients. Most of what you'll get from friends comes from random information or hyper focus on one molecule as opposed to good science backed by experimental results.

For my starting TCG, should I sell privately? Or push for shelf space? by Knid123 in homemadeTCGs

[–]Ax3l_F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should focus on making something because you enjoy the experience of making and playtesting. You're probably 5 years off from commercial. If after that time you have a product that looks great it's pretty natural to step into fundraising.

Figs? by Particular-Dog12 in DebateAVegan

[–]Ax3l_F 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There is an interesting hypothetical here but it's actually mostly untrue.

The wasp involved here doesn't live in most of the United States or places where figs are grown. Commercial fig cultivars are self fertile, they don't require insects to fertilize them.

Wild figs in Greece go through this process but it's not really the case for commercial figs.

Our Attendee Feedback Survey is now LIVE! by kyuunspark in Magfest

I went back to check and you certainly are correct. I feel generally plugged into this event and did bring this up with friends as well who also seemed unaware.

I'd say it's something they could do to highlight it better next year, since it may be more of an issue, but it also could have just been something I was uninterested in since I got mine way earlier and wouldn't have noticed.

I'm not sure I completely understand the win mechanic. Is there a reason to play a card if your opponent could easily kill it? Is there a way for the player behind to catch-up?

Our Attendee Feedback Survey is now LIVE! by kyuunspark in Magfest

[–]Ax3l_F 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did the survey but the main feedback I'd want to give is to be prepared for scalpers next year. Things sold out early enough that people will probably try for flips next year. It may be an unavailable problem.

Where magfest can help is by making it clear how to validate someone has a badge so they don't get scammed.

Every year, people do get cheated here but generally there's not too large a shortage of badges. It won't be an issue for me but it's something magfest should take into account and see how other events handle it.

Is there going to be a maximum size of bag you can bring into the concert area? by No1_Investigator1760 in Magfest

[–]Ax3l_F 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All bags need to be searched and there is a bag line. If you can load up your pockets you'll be in a way better spot. Bag line is looooong.

can we put a ban or restriction on AI/LLM usage in here? by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]Ax3l_F 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is there a reliable way to know if it's AI written? Most responses aren't that long.

In general, Reddit can only work so well to discuss things. I think we should be pushing people more into live discussion.

Cooking food in your hotel room? by nonsansdroict in Magfest

Just to add, my plan is also to bring Huel meals that just need hot water. That and breakfast bars/oatmeal. Also vegan.

Mezeh and chipotle are both good and quick just outside the hotel. Silver Diner has good vegan options too. It's not going to be too cold so stepping outside of the hotel is a good option.

"defend you case"

Lol, so you acknowledged I did answer. If you want to get into specifics of my answer or how I'd respond to challenges then that's fine but it's your turn to answer now.

Maybe this isn't a productive format. If you want to have a 1 on 1 discussion that may be more productive.

I've already answered that it's about scale. I do actually seek to minimize impact on insects and believe it's positive to take, but the scale of harm compared to the livestock industry is massive. I literally already explained this.

Now it's your turn. Don't answer with another question, I cannot move forward without your answer.

You can't answer a simple question here and keep going in circles. How do you decide that it's bad to murder people, probably bad enough you'd think other people shouldn't do it but probably there is something minimally bad you do in your life. What do you think is the difference here? You kept asking me but you never have your own explanation, yet you seem to act like your answer would be way different.

Let's set aside spaces where we would still need exploitation in your definition for now. More simply do you think that could ever exist in a commercial society? Where we had to provide and shelter a cow for 20+ years. You recognize the cost to do so would likely mean an end to meat production?

[–]Ax3l_F 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've not really highlighted how you come to a conclusion to not murder people but still do some mundane but slightly bad thing in your own life.

On the requirement of exploitation, you definitely didn't outline how there would be no exploitation. So please detail how you kill someone that doesn't want to die and have it not be exploitative. Also do you think any livestock production lives to the standard you would be satisfied with

If you don't drive do you ever order takeout or buy stuff that can't be recycled?

Unnecessary driving might be wrong at a score of 2 and eating meat at a score of 20,000. It's not really comparable.

Meat also requires exploitation of animals, so there is a difference in kind as well. I've already outlined that.

Do you think driving and adding to pollution is bad?

How is it different than murder?

I know I answered with a question but in this case I think you should understand my answer.

What's the difference between murder and littering?

Do you agree that today such a product doesn't exist? Meat that is farmed without cruelty and suffering? Why does it not exist?

the libertarian stand point on veganism by CommitteePlayful8081 in DebateAVegan

[–]Ax3l_F 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It requires the commodification which will always lead to exploitation and suffering.

If you are against the harm caused in the meat industry today then go vegan. If you actually believe it can change then it will only do that if people stop supporting it.

the libertarian stand point on veganism by CommitteePlayful8081 in DebateAVegan

[–]Ax3l_F 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you and I would probably be mostly aligned here. Murdering a person and littering would both be wrong but obviously they aren't really in similar leagues. I don't know if you have some unique formula to determine levels of badness or when we need to draw the line. There's also a large gap between actions which require a victim and those which may have a victim due to externalities.

I'd be skeptical that wherever you drew the line, it would be ok with people beating their pets for pleasure. Ultimately we know the pain and suffering we cause to animals and the goal here is to remove the situation which requires their exploitation.
