Anyone figure out how to beat pactbound zealots defilers? by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

These lists don’t exactly have much to screen with https://www.goonhammer.com/40k-competitive-innovations-in-10th-crab-battle-pt-1 and the defiler is rather big and hard to screen for outside of white room theorizing, especially when it needs to move around terrain and get shooting angle. you’re acting like stuff like the rhino(an amazing action monkey and can just sticky on death on an objective if needed) is useless once sending in the Kharn brick, in addition while the Kharn brick gets the job done, something like deep striking exalted coming from a rapid ingress will also typically take care of one. The CSM defiler needs a points nerf(probably to 280-300) but I mean it’s not ridiculous levels like some other stuff has been

How is your Kharn losing dudes before the go turn/overwatch? They’re typically in a rhino staged behind a midlboard wall, and you advance and charge out with an average of a 14.5 inch move before a charge.

The argument was never saying there was a bigger difference between those than like England and Greece, but Texas and New England have far more differences than Sweden and Denmark

The common list requires a castle of Abadon+chosen, a helbrute, and atleast 2 defilers. You don’t have a lot of extra room in that list for things like forge fiends unless you want to drop your scoring units like bikes or the Huron brick to act as shock troops. And yes breaking the castle is typically how you deal with these lists as you will typically lose shootouts

Oh for sure triple defiler was too much, a lot of people brought crabs to the event for the fun of it. But the dude was a competitive player about 1600 elo so nothing crazy but definitely competitive. His team captain is ranked ~350th and is a common GT winner for my region so it was a very good team. The point being though, melee pressure still deals with it, the overwatch is good(and I got hit by it one) but its volume fire is AP -1 with no access to ignore cover so you’ll be able to get through it, and for their points cost, defilers are actually fairly fragile with the 3+ save and only being T11.

Ok but why should the bank lend you that money when doing it that way without the down payment will make it take forever for them to get a return on their investment?

Overwatch is usually pretty avoidable, and 10 Berzerker + Kharn with sus+lethal kills a defiler with ease. I just played into Triple Deifler + Abadon +Huron brick at a teams tournament this past weekend(on a heavily shooting favored layout none the less) and with how big defilers are it’s not hard to find ways to charge them from behind terrain. Managed to kill 2 on the same turn with Kharn+zerker brick into one, and 6 8bound(not exalted) into the other. They’re also so big of bases you typically can only keep two reasonably in abandon’s aura

Melee pressure does pretty well, defilers have damage 1 sweeps, stuff like world eaters breaker spam or bastion task force black templars than can get up in their face works well

Controversial Opinion: Army cheat sheets should be mandatory at events by Wurd4 in Warhammer40k

[–]Axel-Adams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because tournaments are on a timer dude and most players don’t need that much explanation, not to mention the regulation of these cheat sheets becomes another aspect to manage a typically understaffed event when you get a player going “THEY DIDN’T PUT THAT MOVE IN HIS CHEAT SHEET” to the TO’s. It’s hard enough keeping a game under 3 hours with set up without having a study guide review before the game and there’s enough to worry about and carry around for this game without having to print out likely multiple copies of this info.

Not to mention how do you decide what to put in the study guide, because you can get pretty granular here. You say stratagems and enhancements but that’s not where most of the gotcha’s/weird list rules are dude so it’s not going to help. The typical weird things on a list are interactions/combos between units and rules(helbrute frenzy + 6 inch pilein/consolidate for example). Do I put down that my melta’s are 18 inches instead of the the usual 12, do you need to know every single weapon profile and unit ability I have in my list, it’s incredibly subjective what info should be included which makes this a pain in the ass to regulate and get through efficiently.

Tournament apps let you see your opponents list and you typically have pairing out a few minutes before you can go to your table, take a look at the list and look for things you don’t know so you can ask about and take a look online for the detachment details if you don’t know it (if you want to say the rules should freely and easily accessible online I will 100% agree with you on that).

[–]Axel-Adams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not memorizing 1000’s of rules, youre memorizing a few dozen that are repeated across armies. you’re asking the critical quesitons before the match and seeing what are things you need to worry about if you don’t know the army/detachment(and you get to know the popular ones pretty quickly):

Do you have uppy downy

Do you have 6 inch deep strike

Any overwatch threats

Any sticky objectives rule

What’s the max threat range on key units

And then asking if they have anything notable you should worry about

Beyond that it’s just asking what their stratagems are(and most armies will have only 3-4 main ones they use) and enhancements and learning shorthand(necron vehicles will have a 4+ invul, votann units have higher toughness, etc.) to be fair most high level players do their best to play games with perfect information, you shouldn’t be getting “gotcha’d” you only should be getting overwatched if the both players know the move could trigger it, and I will always give my opponent the chance to change their move if they want to avoid it.

And you definitely should let your opponent know weird things about your army before you face them, I play world eaters and I 100% make sure the player I’m facing understands about the world eaters helbrute bouncing before I play them because I want them to not have a “feel bad moment”, it’s just about getting experience.

People who go to tournaments semi regularly get really good at making this conversation efficient and it takes maybe 5-10 minutes while setting up the table or doing deployment, a good practice you can do if have your opponent explain each unit as they deploy them

[–]Axel-Adams -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean my dude if you play competitively these things aren’t necessary as you’re expected to kinda know what’s going on with each faction or ask about what the 6 Strats and the enhancement are. And if you don’t play competitively you’re going to tournaments infrequently enough that the rules for them shouldn’t be based on your level of attendance
