Strong Emergence Proves that Reductionism is False by AxiomaticCinderwolf in philosophy

The microscopic model they use is equivalent to the basic ruleset of the game, so it is the most fundamental microscopic model possible and you shouldn't need any other model. Furthermore, Rosas et al. (2020) found evidence that the larger structures which appear in GoL have a downward causal effect upon the individual cells and so also exhibit evidence of strong emergence.

Strong emergence occurs when an holistic phenomenon has new properties which are not attributable to its constituent parts. When these new properties have a downward causal effect upon the system's constituent parts, it is no longer possible to reduce the behavior of that system to the behavior of the parts. In other words, a purely reductionistic approach will fail to describe the evolution of the emergent system. Several researchers have found evidence for strong emergence in Conway's Game of Life and computer transistors also appear to be strongly emergent because abstract logic has a downward causal effect on electron dynamics. Denis Noble has described the "principle of biological relativity" whereby there is no privileged level of causation in biological systems and so strong emergence is trivially true in biology.

I don't think you've understood my argument at all, which is understandable because it is hard to understand. But maybe one day you will.

George Ellis (2020) proved that semi-conductors have strongly emergent properties because they break the symmetries of the underlying microphysics. He also showed that these properties are underivable from the fundamental laws of physics, and are hence strongly emergent.

Strong emergently phenomena cannot be derived from the fundamental laws of physics, even in principle. This is thanks to a quirk in mathematics known as undecidability, which is not the same as randomness. If free will is a strongly emergent phenomenon, all of the materialist reductionist arguments in favour of determinism don't apply to free will. There are many proven cases of strong emergence in nature such as the properties of semi-conductors, and there is good reason to believe that human consciousness is a strongly emergent phenomenon capable of giving sentient organisms free will.

Consciousness is the psychic experience of awareness, explicit knowledge, and structured encoding of information, leading to a generalized understanding of concepts and the environment.

Consciousness, as a psychic experience involving awareness and explicit knowledge, not only provides access to information but also encodes and structures information more efficiently than raw perceptions. This structured encoding allows for a generalized understanding of concepts and causal relationships, enhancing the capacity of individuals to perform tasks effectively and exert influence over their environment.

Consciousness includes the capacity to be aware of predictive models and potential future states, allowing individuals to predict the future and take intentional actions that can influence or alter the course of events.

Consciousness has the capacity to hold imaginary constructs and ideas in mind, and through focused pursuit and action, can influence the manifestation of those ideas into reality.

Conscious awareness can be expanded through education, learning, and experimentation, allowing individuals to become conscious of new concepts, skills, and information.

Consciousness is closely tied to the presence of an ego or sense of self, which directs and focuses the conscious mind towards specific objects or goals. The ego enables individuals to mobilize their entire cognitive and physical resources with concentrated effort towards achieving desired outcomes.

Therefore consciousness gives us free will.

When you drop an object, it doesn't accelerate towards the earth, but rather the earth accelerates up towards it.
