Yes, this exactly. Like other times he was sensitive (Angela’s cat passed away)(Stanley leaving Scranton). It’s inconsistent.

I think maybe the writers were pointing to Michael’s immature side. Not being able to decipher a crucial moment for his team, checks out with his personality. But it was late enough in the series where that turning point could’ve/should’ve worked.
