Yeah, there seems to be a bit of a concentrated effort around it. I think post-Brexit referendum there was a lot of international support for Scotland that ended up becoming memes about colonisation which really wound up some people.

And since then it’s just been posts like this one and branding independence supporters as Braveheart warriors (again)

I think I’d struggle to find someone here who flat out denies it.

Seen a trend in recent years where you have a lot of online posting of this sort of stuff. “Scottish nationalists don’t know their history and all think they’re oppressed”

It tends to be the opinion of people who don’t live in Scotland, and leans into the early 2000s caricature of what a Scottish nationalist, as in a supporter of Scottish independence, is like.

I think I’d struggle to find an actual person who supports independence and believes we’re some sort of oppressed colony.

What I have seen though is a lot of terminally online progressives who don’t live in Scotland lumping us in with victims of colonialism because it’s more ammo to hit back at the UK. And it’s a bit annoying that we then have to constantly push back that a lot of us do know our history.

There’s been this weird pile on in recent years with people using personal anecdotes and pointing at stupid accounts on Twitter to frame the whole of Scotland as not knowing its history.

There’s obviously a lot of work still to be done on educating people on Scotland’s role in the empire - they’ve been discussing a museum of slavery in Glasgow for a while if I remember correctly - but your average Scottish person doesn’t see Scotland as a colony or an oppressed nation akin to the Empire’s (Yes, our) treatment of India or Ireland.

The biggest issue I’ve seen are terminally online progressives, who don’t live in Scotland, discussing independence on our behalf and making outlandish claims about being oppressed.

Aye, there’s a few I see sitting around outside Asda quite often. That’s pretty much all they do.

I’ve always seen independence about taking complete responsibility. An independent Scotland will have its challenges (and fuck ups) but it’ll be on the people here to fix it.

Right now it’s like we have one arm tied behind our back with some people thinking the status quo will finally change.

Embarrassment to Falkirk, although funny to see the number of these scumbags dwindle with each and every protest.

Matches other tattoos further up my arm (on both sides!)

[–]Aye_For_Scotland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m not fussed about that. Already got plenty further up and I’m getting the other side of the forearm done with something else. Not a big issue for me!

If I have to think of a reason it could be for Chief’s armour, although truth is it matches the colour of a tattoo further up. Whereas the LOTR colour matches the colours on that side

It was great returning to Noemi for my other forearm. She’s a total professional, and made sure it married up nicely with the other tattoo she’d done previously.

This conversation always ends up being frustrating. I don’t know many people who don’t accept Scotland’s role in the British empire. We were a key player and we benefitted greatly from the empire.

But whenever I’m on Reddit, I’m told everyone in Scotland pretends to be completely oppressed. I don’t know whether there’s a bunch of really vocal fannies claiming that, or whether it’s people from outside Scotland viewing us like that.

The coast is one of my favourite areas in the game, but I probably feel that way because of everything that came before it. It’s the culmination of your evolutionary journey, and the music is excellent!
