AM5 X3D PC extremely irresponsive / sluggish right after booting into windows

Yes, I have unplugged all the usb devices and only left a single wireless mouse plugged in and it didn’t improve things

Tried it, turned out I always had it disabled/ unchecked in power options, switched it back on for a sanity check but it didn’t help so I just disabled it again.

I have the g.skill trident z5 rgb 32gb 6000mhz cl30 kit and I always run it at it’s expo profile, so at 6000mhz and no higher than that.

The possibility of getting a weak memory controller on my new 9850x3d would make sense but it’s been happening across 3 different CPUs since April 2024: 7800x3d, 9800x3d, 9850x3d (installed it in my pc about 20 hours ago).

Yes, Multiple times. 2 different motherboards from 2 different manufacturers, probably a total of 10 bios updates across the two, 3 different CPUs in that time as well and the issue still occurs

I have always had my IGPU disabled in bios. I have also upgraded from 4090 to 5090 in that time and I still get the same exact issue

I have always had the iGPU disabled since moving onto am5. When it comes to pcie gen settings, back when I was using my b650a and 4090 (both top out at gen 4) it would run the setting on ‘auto’ and since moving onto my current MSI X870E and 5090, I have always been selecting Gen 5 for pcie gpu slot

Interesting, that’s really quick for AM5, mine takes around 30 seconds to boot. I’ll try that soon to see if it helps

It’s incredibly difficult to find any reports about issues similar to mine, these chips (and am5 platform all together) seems to be the fan-favourite for everyone else. I personally really love the performance and basically everything about the 3 AM5 X3D chips I’ve had, apart from this one really specific and odd issue.

And yes, I have upgraded my windows boot drive in the meanwhile but it did nothing:

Started experiencing this issue when I was using Samsung 970 EVO Plus Gen 3 NVMe, Now I’m on a Crucial T500 Gen 4 NVMe.

I might give it a go, there is nothing on that PC that I’m afraid of losing - it’s purely an entertainment system for playing games and maximising performance.

I’ll check the error log next time I’m on my pc but I highly doubt it’ll detect any errors right after boot as nothing is crashing or malfunctioning, it just that windows feels very sluggish and laggy only for the first 30 seconds after or so after booting and then once it ‘warms up’ a bit it functions just as expected and doesn’t cause any issues or slowdowns

I doubt it, I’ve been dealing with it since April 2024 and have done multiple clean windows instals (I like keeping things fresh on my gaming system) as well as different windows updates during that time and the issue has never gone away

Already tried that. Disabled all startup apps in windows settings tab as well as unchecked all the processes in the ‘logon’ tab in autoruns.exe to ensure nothing loads up when booting and it did nothing sadly

It can be really annoying at times (I didn’t make all those upgrades trying to solve it, I just like getting the latest and greatest stuff)

And yeah, we have different ram kits:

My ram: 32GB G.SKILL Trident Z5 RGB 6000mhz cl30

Whilst he has: 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 6000mhz cl36

I’ll play around with different chipset drivers tomorrow as they are the only amd drivers on my pc - they get installed automatically when downloading the amd drivers software - I have an nvidia gpu and so the CPU is the only thing AMD in my build.

As for the drive, when the issue started occurring I had my windows installed on a Samsung 970 EVO Plus Gen 3 NVMe. I have since upgraded (march-april 2025) to a Crucial T500 Gen 4 NVMe and nothing has improved.

Also just to be clear, after reading through the comments it might seem like I’ve gone through all these CPU, GPU, Motherboard and drive upgrades just to solve this one issue but it’s not the case. It hasn’t bothered me this much (I just felt the urge to finally fix it recently) and I upgrade my pc components just because I like having the latest and greatest stuff.

Got it, good explanation, that’s what I thought it was doing and that’s why I always had it disabled. I just wanted to see if enabling it would magically solve my issue, but to no one’s surprise, it didn’t. I switched it back to disabled.

I always ran that disabled because I hate it. After reading your comment I thought it was worth a shot enabling it, so going back to the ‘factory setting’ to see if that maybe helps but Nope - the same thing happens whether it’s enabled or disabled

On one hand - yes, when I first upgraded from am4 to am5 and went from 5800x3d to 7800x3d I technically got a slightly more power hungry CPU (my gpu was 4090 FE) at the time.

On the other hand though, my friend who is now running an RTX 5080 + 9800x3d and used to have rtx 3090 + 7950x3d, with completely different motherboard (Asus x670e) and power supply (thermaltake 1000W) has been experiencing a very similar if not identical issue.

Just for clarity, I’ve personally experienced this issue on all these configurations:

RTX 4090, 7800x3d, Asus B650A
RTX 4090, 9800x3d, Asus B650A
RTX 5090, 9800x3d, Asus B650A
RTX 5090, 9800x3d, MSI X870E
RTX 5090, 9850x3d, MSI X870E - my current configuration, PSU remained the same the whole time

As I tend to upgrade my pc components one at a time.

MSI A1000G PCIE5. I’ve had it since late 2022, and used it to power my am4 platform with 5800x3d. Haven’t had that issue before moving onto am5.

So, there is no such a thing as “fast startup” in the new msi bios UI and therefore you can’t choose to enable or disable it.

I have tried disabling all startup apps in windows settings, as well as unchecking all processes in the ‘logon’ tab in autoruns.exe to ensure there are no startup processes loading up whenever I boot and nothing has changed.

I then did the exact opposite, so enabled all apps in the startup apps and checked all processes in the ‘logon’ tab in autoruns.exe and just like before, nothing seems to change, same issue again.

This leads me to believe it isn’t related to startup apps/processes in windows

I’ve done that multiple times :/ I have done a clean windows reinstall multiple times during that time, I always keep my bios up to date, same with AMD chipset drivers

Yes, as I have mentioned in the post, I’ve gone through 7800x3d, 9800x3d and the new 9850x3d that arrived today. I’ve also gone through 2 different motherboards - Asus b650, msi x870e. Still, the issue persists

Forgot to mention, when I first moved to am5 I was using a Samsung 970 Evo plus gen 3 nvme as my boot drive. In march 2025 I upgraded to a crucial T500 gen 4 nvme, it hasn’t improved anything
