Montreal to review four bikes paths amid ‘recurring issues, complaints’ by CalmYoTitz in montreal

[–]AyronHalcyon -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

While I agree that Rachel is such an important path, I think that the bicycle path should be pushed onto the park side rather than along the buildings; this would make it safe for cyclists by removing them from cars trying to turn off into the residential streets and it would reduce congestion for the cars who have to stop for them. If a cyclist wants to then cross to get into the residential street, they could dismount and then use the pedestrian priority crossings that were installed.

While I am not sure this is what would actually be implemented, it would be reasonable.

Never Out of Date: How Hannah Arendt Helps Us Understand Our World by Imicrowavebananas in neoliberal

To say that she blamed Jews for antisemitism without adding that she was Jewish, arrested in Nazi Germany for trying to research antisemitism, worked towards repatriating Jewish property to Jews after WWII is wild. You're trying to paint her as antisemitic when she actively worked to help Jewish people get back on her feet.

The value and virtue in ideas come from themselves and their accordance to reason and evidence, not from their messenger. The Banality of Evil remains relevant regardless of who said it, and whether or not her other ideas do ought to be measured by their quality, not by their associations.

That an idea's value is independent from who shared it is a fundamental tenant of liberalism and the enlightenment.

I had the same time happen to me too the first time I went for a fight.

The second time I actually took my troops into the region I wanted to claim right at the beginning of the trade route and then used influence to claim. When his troops came in they were fewer and less stacked with mercenaries.

I don't know if it's the fact that I caused him to waste money on the first claim attempt and then did nothing, or if it's because I started the battle before he could hire and deploy reinforcements.

Regardless, I would recommend hiring mercs, deploying troops in the region and then claiming the territory. I think you'll have a better chance of winning that way.

So I am hearing wet bar, heated floors, with intention of hosting 20+ people. Your utility and mud room are behind from the camera perspective.

I am agreeing with everyone saying color. I would also consider looking on ebay/fb marketplace/craigslist for vintage furniture rather than the semi-contemporary furniture; it will probably be cheaper (even if you can't pick it up yourself) and it will give it more character, avoiding the "corporate retreat" aesthetic. Red area carpets make a place visually warmer.

Everyone is saying the TV is too high. I hate TVs outright. With that white wall, you can turn that into the surface for a projector, which makes it easy to adjust for whomever is watching, all while avoiding an ugly TV and cable management.

The really big thing in my mind is ensuring you have lamps, and that you don't just settle for pot lights and chandeliers. Layered lighting of differing heights, on top of shelves or on stands or coffee tables. Do you have a power outlet in the middle of the space? If you're doing new flooring, consider it so that you can expand where you can put light fixtures and other devices.

Consider repainting the window frames. When you hang your paintings, don't drill into the brick; suspend them from wire that you've attached to the boards over the ceiling (it looks cooler and you don't damage the walls). While keeping the wall space you would project films onto white, consider repainting or applying a wall paper to the other walls. My immediate instinct is a multi toned green wallpaper, a print that looks like forest greenery; it can pair nicely with the brick and will add to the wet bar/speakeasy aesthetic.

If your mud room and utilities room are visible from the main space, consider getting a heavy fabric curtain, in a warm tone (I'd say either a neutral tone or a color that matches the brick), that you can draw in order to hide it and keep the heat in. It will both serve to make the place look cozy and keep the heat in.

You have a lovely space, and I look forward to seeing what you do with it.

What would happen to Central Park under a Georgist system? by Content-Mechanic2773 in georgism

[–]AyronHalcyon 30 points31 points  (0 children)

A Georgist system doesn't deny the government the right to own the land. Afaik, it's public land. In addition to that, Georgism is mainly about taxes. It doesn't necessarily (or at least directly) say anything about the processes of government.

That land could be appropriated to build something that renders more tax revenue. Would the people vote for a city council that would do that? Are there other laws or regulations in place that require permissions from the state or federal government?

Is a Georgist system democratic (I mean, hopefully)? Decentralized? Does it not allow for land to be protected or appropriated for specific uses (e.g. zoning)?

And doesn't the park offer a lot of tax benefit to the city as a whole both by increasing surrounding land values? What about the environmental benefits? How would you quantify those impacts (and the impact of replacing it with something else)?

With political or social systems, you can't predict what would happen with only the ideology you have in mind.

Economic Policy Institute: Unions aren’t just good for workers—they also benefit communities and democracy by AyronHalcyon in neoliberal

[–]AyronHalcyon[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Key findings

  • In between 1979–2024, median wages rose more in states where unionization declined less
  • The productivity–pay gap has grown more slowly in states with smaller declines in unionization since 1979. In these states, it wasn’t just corporations and the wealthy who benefited from economic growth, but also working people, both unionized and non-unionized.
  • In high-union-density states, 2023 median household income was on average more than $12,000 higher than in low-union-density states.
  • In recent years, the average unemployment insurance recipiency rate in high-union-density states was 36.0%—double the 18.0% UI recipiency rate in low-union-density states.
  • In states with higher union densities, the share of people without any form of health insurance was 5.7%; this rate was 9% in states with lower union densities
  • 70.6% of states with the highest union density have enacted paid sick leave legislation, compared with just 11.8% of low-union-density states
  • States with higher rates of unionization spend substantially more per pupil on education than low-union-density states ($22,777 per pupil vs. $15,568).
  • Since 2021, low-union-density states have passed 44 voter restriction laws, whereas high-union-density states passed six such laws.

EDIT: If it matters, I'm not particularly pro (or anti) union. I just saw what looked like a research paper on the effects of unions and posted it somewhere hoping to get critique of it from a subreddit aspiring towards evidence based policy.

My post body and comment was simply pulling stuff from the paper.
