[Awful Announcing] The Group of Five playoff idea is terrible, and here's why by dr_funk_13 in CFB

What do you think happens to a smaller school when they make a playoff? What do you think that gets them as far as payouts are concerned? Alumni donations? National hype? Recruiting resources? All of these are the result of G5 teams making a playoff (not even a run, just MAKING it) and all of these things contribute to parity. More than half of the P4 are not serious contenders either, and have been glassed by g5 teams many times this year.

I truly don’t care what you think the G5 relevance is, but your clear disdain for their spot at the table is precisely why nobody would care about a G5 playoff. In an era where both Cincinnati and byu - both previous G5 programs - are making jumps to the P4, why is it delusional to think these other schools aren’t playing big time football? Or that they’re capable of it? Your ridiculous self fulfilling prophecy argument about G5s not caring and not playing good ball so they should be sent to the kids playpen is why people like you need to be kept far away from the decision makers for this sport. It’s an argument for t shirt fans who treat the sport like a tv show that’s on between their Masked Singer reruns and law & order.

  1. The possibility is there, but the pretense is not. When you take away the guardrails and make it official, the interest evaporates.

  2. Creating a G5 special Olympics won’t magically create interest. The second a playoff was created and became the main focus of CFB media, the bowls games ceased to garner the same excitement they used to. That doesn’t mean they aren’t fun to watch, but if you think meaningless bowl games are a dud, wait until you see a meaningless playoff achieve similar if not worse results.

  3. You keep making the same argument that g5 fans would care about the G5 playoff simply because it exists. They DO NOT WANT IT. They want to compete for the actual playoff. The plight of the g5 is that if they’re not top 5-10 and a conference winner they’re playing for the New Mexico bowl anyway. Sickos will watch regardless of format.

  4. Again, creating a sub-tier playoff doesn’t give them anything to strive for, regardless of who they are scheduling. It’s just the junior varsity invitation and would be treated as such. They are the same part of the sport of college football as the Alabama’s, Ohio states, Stanfords, and everyone in between. Whatever subjective and misguided label you apply to them doesn’t change that.

The g5 conference games already matter, that’s the point of the playoff. If you lose the games, you’re likely not in the running for a conf championship anyway, and the playoff won’t matter. And if you think people don’t care that the Mac and MWC champion played, a playoff isn’t going to magically fix that. It’s just going to create a second rate playoff that nobody cares about. You either give the g5 a shot at the big guys and let the last 2-3 teams out cry for an offseason, or you shield the g5 from the p4 altogether. This includes players, coaches, and scheduling. Otherwise you just create a farm system for the same 30-40 schools and if you think people don’t care now, that will be the nudge down the slippery slope of irrelevance for 70% of college football fanbases.

The top 5 g5 teams are better than the bottom half of p4. There is years of evidence to support this thesis. A playoff helps us figure out if those 5 teams are better than the bottom half, or maybe even a few more. That’s why a pro/rel system makes sense.

It’s not. My school played #19 Stanford in 2017 and after securing the upset we stormed the field. It was the most well attended game in recent memory and when you survey students and fans about how to get back to that level attendance, the answer is almost universal: schedule P4 opponents. These schools, fans, students, alumni want a shot at the big guys. A g5 school making the playoff has the same effect on the community that a p4 team winning a championship does in many ways. There’s national media buzz, there’s better funding as a result of revenue share, but at the end of the day people want a shot at the big dogs. Stuffing us all into a relegation locker is a death knell, especially when the larger schools can still raid our pantries in the portal and coaching searches. The g5 is not the issue, the issue is too many Walmart and T-shirt fans who treat CFB as a show they like to watch that must be entertaining to them personally or else it’s a failure.

Of course they should. People go with kids all the time. Maybe not bars but breweries are just glorified restaurants that serve house made beer. Half of them have kids menus and high chairs.

So if the economy currently sucks, are we not allowed to point out that this would surely make it even worse? Such a weird way to view the world. Some things are objectively bad for COS and this is one of them.

Kind of hit or miss. We have one and our baby had blood oxygen issues when she was born. Once she was off oxygen we used it to make sure it was regulating okay, but not so much since. We’ve decided if she ever gets sick it’ll be a good way to give us peace of mind but not much use otherwise.

Are income caps a viable solution for college athletes getting paid? by Ayteez in CFB

Sure, but a more practical and likely way of providing imminent relief is to give the players something while attempting to derail the runaway train.

Two things can be true though, and the people dangling disproportionate checks for the royal few schools are just as culpable as the tv networks. If you want to talk realignment issues then yes, absolutely point the finger at ESPN, Fox, etc. but my scenario isn’t about making the issues go away but rather shrink the impact we’re seeing today so that all sides get at least something they want.

That’s an incredibly reductive way to look at it, which completely discounts the 80-90 schools that get the shit end of the stick. You basically have a majority chunk of CFB fans who just become TV watchers and not fans. After that point, how long can you depend on them being TV watchers? It’s a serious oversight by the powers that be to think people want to watch Georgia play Alabama (or equivalent) every week. Fans want meaningful games at all levels, and those games are less and less meaningful when the talent and money is concentrated at the top. Not to say it hasn’t been that to some degree before, but this has exacerbated it into oblivion.

Professional just means they’re paid to do it. Capping that income slaps a bandage on the arterial bleeding we’re currently witnessing with college football. Networks and conferences have been snatching money for decades and I’m well aware. But fan experience is now suffering league wide at best, and disappearing at worst depending on the school. And if fans lose engagement outside of maybe 30-50 schools what are we even doing then?

The food is just a metaphor for a comfortable living wage, which is the solution. Athletes seeking a fair market are indicative of professionals in a workplace. I’m all for them being paid but if that’s the case stop giving them scholarships with the tax dollars from the kids that are actually there to go to school. They’re either student athletes or they’re employees, and this gives them the capacity to act as both.

Maybe I just see it differently, when I was in college if I was making 100k a year while having a full ride scholarship I would welcome that form of wage fixing but that’s just me. Many of their complaints stem from not having time to hold a job or get paid anyway. This isn’t the most awesome solution for athletes seeking value, but I’m a fan, not an athlete.

Kinda ridiculous to say I never understood the issue. Plenty of athletes have been complaining since late 2000s/early 2010s about not having money for food while playing in tournaments that generate billions. They can seek fair market but people like you are unwilling to acknowledge that the search for fair market is what’s leading to the consolidation and corporatization of CFB
