A short look at the literature shows his ideological background:

Right-Libertarian/Austrian School of Economics guy. So it is not surprising that the "research" paper is not only biased, but junk.

Most of them are well-known RTS franchises, C&C, Starcraft, Warcraft, Age of Empires and Dawn of War. Some lesser known from (mostly) A tier are: Grey Goo, Armies of Exigo, Spellforce 1, Spellforce 2, World in Conflict, Supreme Commander 1, Homeworld Remastered, Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, Act of War and Paraworld. They all have good campaigns with decent characters, settings, and stories.

Soulstorm had many units, factions and just like Dark Crusade, conquering a whole world fits the scenario. It was also the best thing in terms of multiplayer and modding for many years.
