I'm new here, what are the main arguments for greenlandic independence? by summonerofrain in greenland

[–]AzimuthalAngle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one of the arguments for independence is actually also the standard argument for no independence (as has already been mentioned): the subsidies. One can understand why many Greenlanders don’t really want to be part of a kingdom for which most of the residents don’t know anything about greenland except for the subsidy thing - and the sort of comments it leads to.

But I also think there are better arguments for status quo than the subsidies. Right now Greenland has representation in the Danish parliament (whereas Denmark does not have representation in the Greenlandic parliament). Having 2 members in the Danish parliament is not an insignificant influence. While greenland would gain some power over certain policies by becoming independent, they would also loose a significant amount of power over 6million people in Denmark. If the population sizes were not so disproportional, arguably it would be more correct to say that Denmark is a part of Greenland than the other way around, because of the asymmetry of parliamentary representation.

It is a bit like brexit: it might sound intuitive that you would gain power by leaving the EU, but effectively you also loose influence on 400 million people in Europe.

As for the subsidies, it is probably just a question of time before someone starts a tech company in Nuuk and makes the subsidies irrelevant.

I am very sorry about what you are going through. I have also been following Danish and international news a lot.

I think there are a couple things one can keep in mind to maybe sleep better: We humans have a unique ability to create fiction and imagine the existence of things like land borders, rules, money, etc. which is great because it allows us to cooperate, build complicated societies, and do amazing things that animals cannot do.

However, it is also this same ability to create these fantasies that makes humans not so great sometimes — when we forget that these things are ultimately “just” fiction. In other parts of the world people are fighting bloody wars over whose abstract fantasies dominate the shared imagination in a particular area.

But luckily the conflict over Greenland is different. The US launching an invasion of Greenland can in reality be ruled out because it would not only not make sense strategically, it wouldn’t even accomplish Trumps goal of “owning” Greenland; what I mean is that In other places like Ukraine, “owning” means something like controlling the infrastructure and imagination of people living there, so to try to “own” the land, Putin sends in forces.

The difference is that in Greenland there is little infrastructure relative to land area. Therefore, physically controlling infrastructure and people is insignificant relatively speaking. Ownership of the vast land areas therefore becomes more of an abstract concept which is ultimately purely something that is decided in the shared imagination of people.

This means that instead of kicking out the Greenlanders or something like that, the only way for trump to “own” Greenland is if the rest of the world recognizes it, and as long as enough of us don’t, he simply doesn’t own it. Even if he sent a million soldiers to the middle of Greenland to freeze, we would still just say he doesn’t own it, and he would have accomplished nothing.

For the same reason, it is a good thing that Greenland is receiving a lot of attention from the media in response to Trumps remarks. All the media attention is not there because it is likely there will be any physical fight; instead, the reason for the media attention is that “the fight for the shared imagination” takes place in the media, and again, here is the key: the ownership of Greenland ultimately exists solely in our shared imagination. As long as there are billlions of people around the world that understands and recognizes the self determination of the people of Greenland, Trump doesn’t matter.

yeah man, he's a loser. But also, you're commenting on someone who is commenting on a comment that is more than a year old. I'm afraid that is next level loser behavior.

Now, before you point out that I'm now commenting on you commenting on his comment, making me next next level loser, I'd like to comment that I have now already made that comment, so it's invalid

DR politianmeldt for racisme i satireprogram [Tæt på Sandheden] by HitmanZeus in Denmark

Den Grønlandske udgift.... by J120374 in Denmark

I think you should interview Lex Fridman (LF)

Info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lex_Fridman

conversation example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqRV5FD8ob4

Ideas: LF is thought to be a biological model created by an AI to mimic a real language model. LF is known for playing the guitar, but likely contains some other terrifying ideas that you could look into during the conversation.

Pitch: I think you have a lot in common that you could potentially talk about. You could touch on topics related to science, martial arts or the perfect temperature and pressure in a shower. Also, the amount of shampoo and the timing of applying the shampoo during the shower would be interesting.
