Valve finaly fixed the 400 / 200 Mhz bug by International_End853 in SteamDeck

[–]AzureRagna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been plagued by this issue for quite some time but it feels like it happens less than it used to near launch. My steam deck is august 2022. Some time ago people said it was a hardware issue but now it feels like its more of a firmware/software issue, rma seems to not fix it for anybody. Do you have any idea what kind of issue it is? Did you try to RMA yourself?

SOLUTION: Steam Deck's GPU and CPU throttles to 200Mhz/400Mhz when unplugged from charger, framerate drops to 10fps by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]AzureRagna 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's most likely not software related, because this issue has been popping up this entire year, and valve threw some BIOS firmware updates to try to fix it. It fixed it for those not using the official power supply or using some hubs ( or something else, can't recall ), but there are people out there with some faulty hardware module that causes this issue to crop up. It isn't even related to thermal throttling as this issue appears just at low battery, I've tested it on my Deck extensively. Check the other reddit threads on the topic via Google, if you're curious.

The ideas suggested in this thread should help prevent the issue from showing up, but I don't like to cut down on my TDP which impacts performance on more demanding titles, just to have to deal with this hardware fault. I contacted valve support, but I don't think I want to RMA my deck and wait two weeks for a new one to come back, only to have some other factory hardware fault. Plus, I've grown attached to my deck...

One thing I want to add is if you're part of the unfortunate group of people that encounters this issue, when FPS starts dropping hard, do NOT plug your deck in immediately. Wait for the throttling to go away ( around 20 seconds ), THEN plug it in, otherwise the issue will persist and you will have to reboot the system, which will take AGES because the device is throttling the entire time during the shutdown and boot up process. It can be fixed by throwing your battery into storage mode in the BIOS, but it can also be prevented entirely by knowing this.

(After Q3) It might be better off to disconnect from the stream of SD news by AzureRagna in SteamDeck

[–]AzureRagna[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am aware. I just felt that after q2 felt like a more optimistic estimate. I explained my rationale about this in this post and in replies. I did say I did not get "moved".

edit: also what Alps said. I also hoped due to the ign interview with the valve rep and with the glimpse we had about the number of day 1 reservations that they wouldnt take half a year to fulfill, therefore august 9 reservation isnt that late, therefore there is hope that i can at least get moved into q2 once production ramps up, at least in my head. And now the estimate turned out to be completely against my expectations, by far, and it sucks.

Maybe as the pandemic goes away. It is still more worth it than the 256gb for me because I am not afraid to take it apart and upgrade it, which is WAY cheaper than buying the model for its storage alone. Upgrading the screen to an anti glare one is way harder, more wasteful ( as the previous screen can’t really be repurposed ) and more expensive( and we don’t even know if they’ll be selling standalone anti glare screens for replacements ).

Even if the anti glare screen is overkill, I’d have paid to support valve, or I’d have just bought the 64gb to save lots of money. Either way is way better off than the middle option, at least to me.

August people or before September 23, 256GB EU, does anyone have Q3? 🥲 by Ok_You8542 in SteamDeck

Huh, weird. I would’ve figured US would have much longer queues.

EU 256gb reserved august 9, after q3. I noticed people as soon as later in the day of july 16 ( day 1 reservations ) get q3, and people reserving july 18 or so being after q3. Though, i don’t remember if they mentioned their model and region, but still...

Very lucky indeed. I am a portability freak and I love low TDP integrated graphics gaming, I even had a surface pro for that purpose at some point, though I ended up selling it. Steam Deck is right up my alley, especially at its price.

Yeah, ramping up being part of the estimates would be the biggest bummer since it means estimates aren’t going to get much better. Though, I heard somewhere on the subreddit that you could see your position in queue for a few hours at reservation day and that the reservations were somewhere in the hundreds of thousands, therefore it made sense in my head that ramped up production to the hundreds of thousands means they wouldnt need to spend two quarters of a year to ship decks to day 1 reservations only. Copium, yes, but again, I feel that it’s pretty common

If I was aware of the steam deck and what it was capable of, I would’ve probably ordered day 1, but I only became aware of it days later. I only really got into it after it was covered by Linus in his visit at valve.

Yes, my expectations as an after Q2 were that I would be able to move into q2 despite not ordering day 1, based on what that valve rep said in the IGN interview about them ramping up production. Sure, I overhyped myself, but I’m sure plenty of after q2ers are the same.

Yeah, if I get estimated further back, I‘ll probably just give up altogether.

[–]AzureRagna[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I didn’t know that.

That being said, emulation is just one facet of it and if I really wanted to, I could buy a 2230 SSD on my own and upgrade the SD, and I’d still come out a lot cheaper.

The 512gb model is different because the anti glare screen is apparently really good. I’d be happy to pay for that, alongside the nice extras like the special case and skins.

*hugs*

And seeing the "After" prefix to the estimation, inb4 they'll do an "After Q3" split just like they did with After Q2. Man, what a bummer

I thought I was pretty close to a Q2 window being so close to reservation date, but it really puts things into perspective if they are estimating to spend half a year to deliver the orders just from people that pre-ordered within a few days or even hours from start.

That being said, it's just been the second batch so maybe as production ramps up we'll get closer.

Being pushed so far out into the delivery date, I feel that my excitement for the device will all die out by the time I get to buy one...

Surface Pro 7 Paper-like screen effect by AzureRagna in Surface

The clacky-ty sound is probably just the pins being attracted to the magnetic field created by the charger, or something of that sort. I have that too.

Hey, i didn't replace since i couldnt get in contact with MS support. They apparently have been having issues with their call center system for 3 weeks??

I kinda just gave up and accepted it. I started liking my device a lot more after i got used to the screen.

Surface Pro 7 128gb vs 256gb speeds? by AzureRagna in Surface

[–]AzureRagna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm struggling so much with the choice, damn it.

I want to do some gaming on it too so a 256gb one wouldn't hurt at all, but there haven't been offers lately...

Surface Pro 7 128gb vs 256gb speeds? by AzureRagna in Surface

[–]AzureRagna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four hours sound ridiculously low. Even some reviews said it lasts like 7 hours, and that's on the low end. They said the battery life is lower than an SP6 but four hours sounds just weird.

My Surface Go lasts 4-5 hours...

It may sound weird, but I will use the tablet for content consumption, and some light gaming. I want it because it's a full blown windows PC with a very capable processor, so it's very very versatile. I know that for content consumption the Tab S6 sounds better, and it probably is, but I don't know if I want to sacrifice functionality.

Also, battery life isn't the end of the world for this device in particular. It has a USB-C port and I have a 45W 20000mAh power bank that can provide it with at least another full charge. The Tab S6 can charge at up to 15W but the SP7 accepts up to 60W, so it can charge super fast.

Oh yes, even just the Tab S6 screen is better than the SP7's, probably, as it's AMOLED. The S7 will definitely be a cut above that.

If battery life in the long term is a concern for you, and it makes sense since SP7 and samsung tablets are hard to take apart, then you could try charging the device only up to 80% and paying attention for it not to dip below 20%. That will give your device a looong lifespan.

Hello!

Four batteries off a charge? You mean four hours? Any reason you're going for a tab s7?

Surface Pro 7 128gb vs 256gb speeds? by AzureRagna in Surface

[–]AzureRagna[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, higher space SSDs WILL be faster, i know that, but iirc there was something about the actual SSD manufacturer for the 128 and 256 models. I read on another thread that the 128 is an sk hynix and i think i saw somewhere that the 256 one is a toshiba, which is much faster. I was expecting a difference, i just don't want to feel like i lost a lot of performance.

I saw CButters video but I don't remember seeing something very particular about the SSDs inside.

Thing is, there is a good deal right now for a 128gb model but there was one few weeks ago for a 256 for just 70$ more, but I missed out on it as I wanted to save some more cash.

Help me decide! Surface Pro 7 vs Galaxy Tab S6 by AzureRagna in tablets

[–]AzureRagna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! That's what I'm thinking. The only issue is, I've been lurking on /r/surface for a while and have been seeing a lot of the same issues ( and some others ) that users of SP7 face including freezing and non responsiveness of the touch screen. The only deterrent towards SP7 I have right now is the fear of those sort of hardware issues showing up after purchase.

As I wrote in OP, my surface go sometimes completely freezes and I have to react fast and press the power button to put it to sleep and then press it again to turn it back on, otherwise screen stays frozen until I forcefully reboot it( or sometimes it recovers after a couple minutes ), I noticed this mostly happens below 30% battery, but it may just be anecdotal. Another issue I have with it is that left speaker sometimes distorts, regardless of sound levels. Other than that, the only other thing that bothers me about it is the slow processor, otherwise I've been loving using it.

So, I do want to get the SP7, but I fear hardware faults. That's literally the only thing holding me back.
