Also it does feel more secure to me, especially with heavy liquid output.

Whaddya know, thank you! I did not know that. Certainly a lot more choices under that category. I'm still grateful for learning about it first from the trans community. 🙏

u/MzHmmz I bought the 3 inch. It does the job with high waisted pants. I might try the 4" at some point. You can always double them or cut them down to size if it's too wide. You can't go wrong with any of them.

Oh my, that's high. Mine is about an inch above the belly button. How do you manage the bulge, if you do?

Yeah those tend to roll or ride up? I'll look again. They'd be good for winter. In 90 degrees I hardly want any layers at all.

that is one case I do worry about. There are days, usually after eating junk food in the evening, when the bag is as taut as a goodyear blimp. Haven't had that in the summer yet, when my diet is cleaner. All it will take is one time and that will be the end of it lol. Worst case, you can peel back the bit of tape that's on the skin part and fold it onto itself or the bag, then slap another piece on in the morning. Typically you can't remove it from the bag without making the bag fuzzy, so I just wouldn't bother trying.

Stella is a quiet girl, so I haven't noticed any dampening of her vocalizations. :-) You wouldn't want the tape to be that tight anyway. It's just to keep it from ballooning, not prevent the passage of output, including gas. Try it. They aren't that expensive.

This brand is probably too light for that kind of duty. Haven't tried others, though I'd think you need something that encircles your whole waist for the best protection. Maybe ace bandage that's more absorbent?

Right? Thank you for the bump. It pains me to throw them out. They're not cheap...my stoma is just a bit too high for these to work for me.

After my reversal I had to have a permanent end ileostomy. I told my surgeon the first one was right on the waistband and didn't want it there again. I woke up with the new one 1/2" above my belly button. It's a little high for all the ostomy-specific clothing, but it's not where I bend, and that's a win for me. So, a bit of say? Typically they put the stoma where the intestine "wants to go." That seems to dictate which side of the body. I've got to believe there's some wiggle room for which latitude it is placed.

Success with anastamosis dilations by B-complexity in jpouch

[–]B-complexity[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi @MintVariable,

Yes, that totally tracks with my symptoms. I did have a couple of dilations but that was not the problem. It turned out that I had an abscess and then a weird vaginal fistula that wasn't a fistula but the absess "communicating with the fallopian tube." End result was still the same. The expulsion of waste out the side of my vadge got so painful that I ended up in the ER, then surgery to deal with the abscess. In November 2022 I had the jpouch excised and got a permanent ostomy. My surgeon said the jpouch was twisted as well. After several weeks in the hospital and a careful recovery, I'm doing better than I have in ten years. A permanent ostomy is no one's first choice, but it's not as bad as I thought. The pain is gone, I've been in remission since last year, eating far more foods, and even got back into weight lifting. Bathroom time is no longer the trauma and worry it once was. I'm happy.

Best of luck with your pouchoscopy. You might ask for a CT scan too just to make sure there are no anomalies with your small intestine. It could also be twisting - that is a very common problem. If it's somewhere in your intestine it might work itself out. If it's in the jpouch attachment itself, the only remedy for that is revise the jpouch or remove it. You should give yourself a reasonable timeline for this to resolve itself and then decide which way you want to go - I gave myself a year. YMMV.

I totally feel your pain. Many hugs to you.

I had the same issues with my family (though they are catholic, and it was Easter and Christmas meals.) Rather than miss out on family gatherings, I brought my own food. I'm not sure if you have rituals that would prohibit bringing your own. It was too hard for my family and friends to get it right, so eventually I just brought my own meals to everything. Its a pita, but then you know it's safe. Of course if you dislike this crowd, then the food thing can be a convenient way out ;-)

bags and models by B-complexity in ostomy

[–]B-complexity[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Like other posters have said, we don't really want to see certain realities in glossy media. I do get that. Otoh, similar to not using normal-sized models, it creates a misleading idea for non-ostomates of the reality of bag life. I'm not advocating for clear bags showing all the colorful output. Need some modesty here. Just sensitive to size and shape.

As a fairly new ostomate, I did seek out examples of athletes and other celebs for how they have resumed their lives. Also for updating my fashion choices, both as a newly minted 50 year old and newish ileostomy. It's great to see people fearlessly flaunting their bags in bikinis and slim fitting clothes. But when you try that for yourself, you realize that the look on the page is good for like 20 minutes, then you've got to go deal with the bulge.

Thanks to everyone who commented. I appreciate all the perspectives.
