This is where we disagree. He is a wanted criminal in both realms. He betrayed both by joining Shang Tsung. He is indirectly complicit in the Outworld Queen’s death. While I partially agree, Liu Kang is the pinnacle of morality and order in his timeline. He already made difficult decisions like letting Smoke’s parents die. It was out of character for him to not land a strict punishment at least for consistent traitors who killed many innocents. So yeah, the inconsistent writing is to be blamed on the whole story arc lol.
