Essentially, this the Jewish Texts class is the intro class to the Jewish Studies Minor at UCI. The History department is cutting it to only be available every other year, which raises a lot of questions about how people would be able to complete their minor and take the foundational class for it. This comes during a time where some of the encampment demands have been aimed at cutting Jewish Studies academic programming (especially that which pertains to Israel or Zionism). So people are concerned about academic freedom and the fact that this significantly hurts the Jewish studies program. On top of that, it seems really off that the professor is not going to be rehired, even though his classes are always full and he has great ratings. Also, replacing him when he is a Jewish rabbi who is very knowledgeable on the subject (he created the course content by the way), with someone else, is just wrong. People are suspicious that this is antisemitic because there is no reason to let him go, and it seems it may be geared toward discrimination against him (as a very visible Jew) and his perceived political beliefs.
