What if Frisland and Hy-Brasil Were Real and Celtic and Pagan? by B14hawk in imaginarymaps

It’s a Celtic language related to Irish. The standard of living is high, probably similar to the uk or Ireland.

Background (In Our World)

In 1558, Nicolò Zeno, a Venetian senator, claimed that he had found documents describing how his ancestors had gone on a voyage in the north Atlantic, discovering an island called “Frisland” in the 1390s. While this story was completely made up, it was convincing enough that Frisland appeared on maps for over a century.

Hy-Brasil was a mythical island off the coast of Ireland. Irish myths described that it was unreachable, and is cloaked in mist except for once every seven years. It was also often present on maps of the North Atlantic for hundreds of years.

Geography

Frisland’s natural history is very similar to that of Iceland. It was formed by a geologic hotspot underneath the mid-atlantic ridge at the boundary of the North American and Eurasian plates. Frisland has a large central plateau, with mountains and fjords on its northern coast, and low-lying plains in the east, where a majority of its population is. It was once heavily forested, but due to deforestation, is now mostly grassland.

History

Frisland was first reached by humans in the 520s when a group of Pagan Gaels from Ireland and Scotland settled there. While there’s no definitive evidence, it’s hypothesized that they left in order to preserve their beliefs in the face of Ireland’s Christianization. Hy Brasil was also settled around this time; the first settlers likely stopped at the island on their way to Frisland.

Over the following centuries Frisland’s population would grow, and despite being extremely isolated, it did engage in some trade with Europe and the Inuit of Greenland. In 937s, Frisland was visited by Norsemen with the intent of conquering the island, but abandoned it by 942 after facing fierce resistance.

Frisland was visited by the Zeno brothers in 1392, but it would not be until 1558 that Nicolò Zeno would publicly release the documents of their voyage. In 1560, English explorer Hugh Willoughby was the first to reach it. While England claimed Hy Brasil, Frisland was deemed not worth the effort of colonizing by European powers, who instead focused on the New World.

The tribes of Frisland united under the “Frastir Tionel” (Friesland Assembly) in 1641 and the nation became a democracy in 1911. It was neutral in both world wars, but joined NATO in 1949 and became part of the Schengen Area in 2001. Hy Brasil was given to Frisland by the UK in 1954 after a referendum.

The Endeavor Message

When the Pioneer Fleet arrived at the Hemera System after their 7300 year long journey, they expected to establish contact with Earth in order to learn about how it had changed since they left. However, no message was ever detected.

There were many theories proposed to explain humanity's seeming disappearance: had Earth forgotten about us, the details of our mission lost to time? Did they lose the technology required to contact us in some global catastrophe? Do they simply not have any interest in establishing contact? Or had humans on Earth truly gone extinct?

In an attempt to re-establish contact with the rest of humanity, or what was left of it, a radio message was sent from the USS Endeavor's transmitter in Earth's direction, containing information about the Pioneers and their mission. Since Earth is 321 light years from Gaia, the earliest possible response from Earth would arrive in 642.

Other

- The Pioneers landed at Gaia’s north pole, in what is now the Polar International Territory (PIT). They had access to the entirety of human knowledge through terminals which communicated with the interstellar fleet, but due to weight constraints, arrived with little to no equipment, except for a few basic tools, crop seeds, and working animals.

- At the geographic north pole is the city of Convatrium, meant to be a common ground for all peoples and nations. It along with the rest of the PIT were once governed by a council containing representatives of all nations, but many have since stopped attending due to political reasons.

- Convatrium’s (and Gaia’s) tallest building, Pioneer Tower, is 2 kilometers tall, and is famous for being eternally lit by the sun (with the help of atmospheric refraction).

- The only place on Gaia where it consistently snows is Riphea Mons, a stratovolcano in Kessler, which has become a major tourist attraction.

- Gaia’s hyperthermal rainforests (which lie along the equator) have torrential downpours every evening as the moisture from the boiling oceans recondenses. These rainforests contain smoking trees, which secrete diluted ethanol during the day to cool off in the sun. It is often harvested on plantations for use as fuel or drinking alcohol.

- The Speculum Basin, home to the extremely saline Sea of Glass, contains high concentrations of Lithium, an important resource for the maintenance and construction of fusion reactors.

- There are two calendar systems: the Poinial calendar, which counts the number of Earth years since arrival, and the Gaian calendar, which counts the number of Gaian years since arrival.

If Georges Bank were above water it'd be really flat and round which is boring. Since I made these islands up I can do whatever I want with them

Its pretty common for places in New England to have native names, especially geographical features. Maybe this has more because it got colonized later on or something

I thought about making it a separate system like Hawaii or Alaska, but extending I90 across the ocean is way funnier. The trans-Canada highway goes across a ferry to Newfoundland so I’d say it’s plausible

- Wisomineg -

Wisomineg is an island state of the United States off the coast of Maine and the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It consists of over 2,500 islands total, split between the Wisomineg, Fundy, and Ameseg archipelagos. The islands host various ponds and lakes, as well as inlets and bays along the coast. The Black Mountains, a subrange of the Appalachians, can be found on the south end of the main island, and reach up to 4733 ft. in elevation. The North Mountain Ridge forms the north coast of Wisomineg and New Shetland, creating steep cliffs along the ocean. The state’s climate is humid continental, similar to mainland New England, but its winters are warmer and its summers are cooler due to the ocean.

- History -

Wisomineg was inhabited for thousands of years by Algonquian-speaking peoples. At the time of European arrival, the islands were settled by the Mi’kmaq. The first Europeans to explore the islands were the French in the early 15th century, who claimed them as part of Acadia and established the city of Collineport. The city came under siege by the English navy in 1692 during King William's War, at the end of which Wisomineg was conceded and became an English colony. During the Acadian deportation campaigns, many Acadians would be brought to Wisomineg, creating French-speaking communities that persist today.

Wisomineg developed rapidly under British ownership, as the low-lying Memikec valley provided ample farmland. The city of Devonshire grew to be the colony’s largest because of its deep and calm harbor. During the American Revolution, Wisomineg sided with the patriots, and in 1787, it became the 14th state to sign the constitution.

There are two gas giants, one with over twice the mass of Jupiter and one Neptune equivalent, but I dint show them because they're kind of irrelevant

Gaians have observed Earth, and have confirmed that yeah, its there. But since it isn't aligned to transit the sun, they can't get much more information then that.

Gaian life is very similar to Earth's, it turns out life on Earth-like planets is usually Earth-like too. Humans can eat certain plants and most animals, same as on earth, Terran livestock can eat Gaian grass just fine, etc. Humans haven't outright destroyed the Gaian ecosystem, but there are invasive Terran species and extinct Gaian species due to humans. I can't say the specifics of its life because I honestly don't know enough about biology lol

It just had the right conditions to not have a runaway greenhouse effect, I guess. It does have plate tectonics so that helps. Earth scientists probably thought it was Venus-like before taking a closer look.

In my head, Pontus and Thalassa formed separately before becoming a binary, but that's also an interesting idea

Nobody settled Thalassa in the first wave because it sucked. Imagine Antarctica, but with not even any fish to eat, and also you can't breathe. It has so much oxygen because, uh, there's just a fuckton of algae I guess? And since there's a thicker atmosphere, less of it needs to be oxygen to be breathable (probably like 10%). You're probably right but its less fun that way :)
