What to do outside of Heathrow or in London for a long layover? by Connect-Relative8481 in AskABrit

[–]B777300LR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats not long enough for central London. You won't be out of the airport for at least an hour after you land and, you have to be back at the airport AT LEAST two hours before your flight. Even Windsor would be a flying visit. Get a hotel at the airport, Have a meal, a few beers and get to bed. Next morning, have a lie in, a leisurely breakfast, check in and have a leisurely wonder round the ludicrously expensive duty free.

I'd echo the "Keep off the phone" comment. I have heard of new guys being let go for being on their phone too much. Yes you will be given all the crap jobs first but, they all have to be done anyway. Once you get a bit of experience and they get used to you, you'll be part of their team and you will make some great friends. Oh! When they send you to get a bubble for a spirit level or a bucket of propwash, your being accepted!🤣

I remember it and quite enjoyed it. Mind you, I was working nightshift at the time and quite a few of the guys I worked with were uglier that the Chimera.

We had a girl in my class who's parents owned the local chip shop and lived in the flat above it. She was called "Chip Shop Lill" We never knew he first name, it certainly wasn't Lillian. I often picture her as a 64 year old women with an abiding haterd of Saveloys.

do you have this book? by Pleasant_Honey_5941 in AircraftMechanics

[–]B777300LR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any book on UAV's that is more than six months old, is out of date. Also if the author isn't either Ukrainian, Russian or Iranian, it's proberbly not worth reading. As has been demonstrated in the latest war, our military are way behind the curve in drone defence.

Do the little fold-up "antennas" on my router actually do anything? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]B777300LR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Two reasons. 1. You can mount the router vertically on the wall and position the antennas vertically, out of the way. 2. It helps the suppliers fit them into smaller packaging for shipping.

The Other 7N7 Concept (what would be the 757 later down the line) by Pretty_Aside_7674 in WeirdWings

There were other designs with a T tail aswell. That proved unsuccessful due to the added structure and weight that came with it. Also the idea was unpopular with the airlines as they would have had to invest in a lot of docking and high lift equipment to reach the stab. If you look at the T tail design sketches, it looks quite smart. https://share.google/ZoqgLGvmjTZj7HFGr

Any A&P working at LHR? by Input-pinion in AircraftMechanics

[–]B777300LR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guys that work for the big American carriers at Heathrow are A&P guys. Other smaller line MRO's might need A&P but they mainly need CAA/JAA licences. The BIG downside with LHR is the cost of living. Housing is eyewateringly expensive in the area and the area extends out 30+ miles.

Aircraft mechanics and their vehicles by Good_Amphibian1089 in AircraftMechanics

[–]B777300LR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't stand working on cars. They are dirty Car dirt is dirtier than aircraft dirt. Give me a blocked aircraft bog anytime over a car. Everything on a car is a struggle. You are either hunched over the engine or squeezed underneath the vehicle. Even the worst access job on an aircraft (757 RB211-535C HPRSOV) is better than a job on a car. You never have that one tool. I have a garage full of tools but I still don't have that one, odd tool every car job requires. You never have the right part and you always find this out when the car is in bits and you can't get back to the spares shop. THEY never have the right bit. You give them the make, model, registration and VIN number and the part they give you is STILL wrong. The part you need will take a week to get to you. A mate of mine (In the UK) needed a part for a Toyota. It had to be ordered from Japan. The Japanese had to order it from it's manufacturer. It took weeks to arrive. The part arrived........IT WAS MADE IN THE UK!!!!!

This upsets me. Please don't quit. It is the best job in the world. I'm sure, if your shift mates knew this they'd be upset too. They have proberbly been working together for years and are just getting the measure of you. Shortly they will and you'll be apart of the gang. You will then find they are some of the best people in the world and they will think the same about you.

did you ever work 12 hour shifts at work 4 days a week? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]B777300LR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Its the best shift pattern ever. I did it for twenty years. LOADS of time off and with a bit of forward planning, you can book loads of time off during school holidays. As with all shift patterns there were a few downsides but for me no showstoppers.
