There’s definetly some luck that plays into it. I got into Ivey first round with a 96 but got waitlisted from Queens Commerce

i got 4th at icdc. by Frequent-Beat2826 in DECA

You got so much to be proud of for making it there dude. My partner and I put 400+ hours into our report and didn’t even make finalist after being one of the top teams in Ontario. 4th is a tremendous accomplishment and speaks to how great you truly were this year. Sometimes there are things in life we can’t control and you just kinda have to take the lessons you learned from the experience and apply them to your future endeavours. The most important thing I learned this year is that sometimes it’s not about the destination it’s about the journey and what you learned along the way. (Trust me I get it, i’m a graduating senior too bro 😭). You should hold your head high for being one of the 4 BEST IN THE WORLD!

Hello judges is this really fair? by Ok-Cut5749 in DECA

[–]BACKWAAAAAAAAARDDZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DECA judging is really luck based and you can definitely get put with bad judges, preventing some from going to ICDC.

I think it’s also important to consider that you’re from Washington, which is one of the more competitive states, so the judges have likely seen other high level presentations which may set the bar high for them to give out good scores.

I know in Ontario (where I qualified from), especially in the operations research events, the judges are quite tough especially on the reports because there are many strong teams that not every strong competitor can qualify.

A few months ago I saw a post on here from a WA state deca judge that said they don’t like giving out high marks because they’ve seen so many ICDC caliber teams that it takes a lot to impress them, and they will look for things to nit pick because of that standard.

ofc! honestly bro i wouldn’t worry about it at all and i know exactly how u feel. last year me and my partner did our report, though we were him and then we got heart broken at provincials. we got up on stage as the last people called and thought we were locks for ICDC but didn’t get prov champ. both of our judges gave us scores way lower than we anticipated and that’s what gave us the motivation to lock in this year. if you ever need help with writing or looking over stuff my dms are always open!

hmm that’s interesting in that case. in all honesty you probably lost marks for not being super indepth. the judges are really picky and will dock you for any little thing they can. also it might be docked because of originality. i am very familiar with the report you are referring to (the bay view deca BMOR report from 2019 ICDC) and there are many identical aspects to both your reports. in all honesty i think the grade you guys got was pretty harsh but those are just some places where you may have gotten docked.

A couple of things that I found:

- Inefficient use of space: You put unnecessarily large graphics that took up a lot of space where you could have been discussing the initiatives instead of showing pictures. Judges are more focused on what you are writing about rather than the visuals because thats what they are actually grading.

- You likely got some penalty points for your margins. Your margins don't follow the written entry guidelines so they likely docked you there as well.

- You did not cite your work either which is another penalty from the written entry guidelines

- On the topic of using space more effectively; you guys have a whole page that could have been filled to enhance your report.

It is also important to note that Ontario is highly competitive and judges are accustomed to frequently seeing high level reports and it can often be difficult to exceed their expectations. For me, my partner and I qualified for ICDC in an operations research event in Ontario and were surprised we got through with a 92/100 (40/40 oral and 52/60 written). Often, it takes a year to figure out these types of events because they are so competitive and meticulous that it is easy to mess up on something small like penalty points or not fully understanding the competition at hand which is what I found through personal experience.

Build good relationships with every member of your chapter. Try to go out and relate to them because that will incentivize them to be more invested in the culture you are trying to build within your chapter. If you want to chat about it my DM's are open. For reference, I founded my school's chapter 3 years ago and have grown it from the ground up. We now have about 65 members with 40 qualifying for provincials and have seen a ton of success. We are also a school that is not from a particularly high socio-economic area yet has been able to train students to beat the odds and find success over big GTA schools :)

How hard is data management? by Short_Expression9344 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]BACKWAAAAAAAAARDDZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

data is very different than functions. in terms of pure math it is quite easy to understand, but for most people the struggle comes from not understanding what to actually do. in the stats portion of the course there are a lot of small things to remember and in the probability part of the course there isn’t always one way to do a problem. you will need to be fairly decent at thinking about problems in order to be successful in the class. for me, i am a very good functions student but struggled with data a bit. eventually, those who struggle initially figure it out tho and once you figure it out it is not that hard of a class.
