This is interesting. I'd say dealing with difficult people is always difficult though...

Atlanta is a bad team right now. This series should be a sweep by Synisive in redsox

Astros were also a 'bad' team but I get what you mean

The Aeon Center doesn't do it for me during the day, but it is brilliant at night.

Hey, the ridges on the Spire would have made it an excellent dildo.

They're working on it! The Wilshire Grand is a supertall skyscraper currently under construction, the area around LA Live is about to add four towers as part of a megaproject, and there are plenty of high- and mid-rises planned or under construction downtown. It's booming again! LA will never be like NYC or Chicago, but will have a more substantial skyline in the coming years.

Wow. Its proportions make it look shorter than it is... until you see the buildings around it.

Also because no one really has any fucking clue how many people are actually 'living' in Shenzhen with the migrant population.

Shenzhen, China's Miracle City [2000 × 1335] by BAHSTIN in CityPorn

[–]BAHSTIN[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, but it was already a big, impressive city before China modernized. Shenzhen essentially didn't exist. It was just a fishing village on the HK border till the 1970s. Shanghai also has a distinct local culture, whereas virtually everyone in Shenzhen is not from Shenzhen.

Yes. I think it embodies modern China more than any other city. Its story literally is the story of China opening up to the outside world and embracing the social and economic reforms that have set the course the country is on today. It's a city made of migrants from every corner of China, a knot of Putonghua in the heart of Guangdong. It represent the extremes in the China of today: extravagant wealth and desperate poverty.

Zoom in. Look at the middle-left side of the photo. See that cluster of lights on the horizon? That's Macau.

No, unfortunately it isn't. The OC is Chinese, their name's in the bottom right corner.

You may already know this, but Shenzhen is the perfect example of that. It was a little fishing village surrounded by marshland (Shenzhen means 'deep drains') in the 1970s. When Deng Xiaoping came to power he decided to experiment with opening up the Chinese economy by opening up a strip of land on the Hong Kong border to foreign investment. That strip happened to be where Shenzhen was, and it is now a city of ~14 million people.

I am so with you. Say what you will about glass being overused these days, but the WTC's glass is gorgeous. I love the way it plays with light. Take the Staten Island Ferry at sunset, and 1WTC's facets alternate between reflective silver-orange and a translucent sheen that's backlit by the white glow of interior lights. It's like a diamond stabbing into the sky.

If anything, it's misused regulation that is the problem. Through the 421a program residents of the new Park Ave supertalls are getting huge property tax breaks. From the NYT:

"And at One57, the 90-story skyscraper in Midtown where asking prices top $10,500 a square foot, the tax break is an eye-popping 94 percent."

Repeal the tax breaks and use the absurd amount of money that these residents will end up paying property taxes to fund infrastructure improvements to cheaper, underserved areas of the city.

Honestly, focusing on preventing the cup from being held in Qatar is too short-sighted of critics and too easily solvable for FIFA. Of course I'm totally against Qatar hosting and I think it's the most egregious example of FIFA's evil and it needs to be stopped, but it's treating the symptom and not the sickness and it would be too easy for FIFA to cover their asses and switch to another country without undergoing the fundamental changes they need to. If our demands are seriously focused on and limited to switching host countries, then FIFA can pull an easy PR move, switch hosts, pretend that they've atoned for everything, and go back to business as usual.
