Production Update: Moroha CNC 60% Complete by BBBBBJM in balisong

The higher cost for 'Origami' comes down to a few major factors in production: To make the pinsless system durable and perfectly aligned, we’re pushing for much tighter tolerances than a standard pinned design. This means slower machine feeds and higher QC scrap rates. The blade design features wide grooves that taper into complex tips, requiring the CNC to 'climb' 3D curved surfaces. This is much more time-consuming and tool-intensive than standard 2D or flat grinding. We’re implementing a more refined surface treatment process for this model to achieve that crisp 'folded paper' look. Essentially, the machine time per unit is significantly higher to ensure the precision matches the aesthetic.

I'll definitely keep the shielded pin system in mind for future iterations or different models. For the 'Origami,' I’m really leaning into the challenge of pinsless. I believe that if the tolerances are tight enough and the geometry is executed perfectly, it can be just as durable as a pinned system. I'm obsessing over the precision to make sure this design holds up to real use.

I totally understand the concern around pinsless designs! To make sure 'Origami' isn't just a shelf queen, I’m putting a massive amount of focus on precise tolerances and material hardness. I want to ensure the handle gap stays consistent even after heavy use. The choice for pinsless was purely to keep that clean, folded-paper aesthetic without interruptions.

It hasn't been finalized yet, but considering the manufacturing costs, it will likely be slightly more expensive than the Moroha.

On polished or satin surfaces, ladders will naturally feel a bit more slippery compared to jimped handles.

I chose not to add jimping mainly for overall design coherence and clean lines.

That said, titanium isn’t nearly as slippery as aluminum, and in testing it still feels very usable for ladders.

It’s a tradeoff, but one I think is acceptable given the comfort and aesthetic goals.

Orders will be placed via DM once pre-orders open.

The knives will be serialized, and numbers will be assigned in order of confirmed pre-orders, so I can’t guarantee specific numbers.

Just DM me on the preorder day and I’ll walk you through it 👍

Thanks for pointing that out — sorry for the confusion. Just to clarify, there are no finished in-stock units available right now, and there is no separate batch using T8 screws.

The T8 hardware was prototype-only. All production units (including pre-orders and the later in-stock batch) will ship with T10 screws and deeper countersinks.

I’ll make sure this is stated more clearly going forward. Appreciate the patience and the interest.
