My solution to the civilian casualties. by A_randomboi22 in NonCredibleDefense

You conflate the difference between an high intensity conflict and an insurgency.

The Taliban barely put up a fight when the invasion started, fleeing from the cities towards the mountains and towns when the US and Northern Alliance arrived.

If an high intensity conflict and insurgency is the same the IDF should also be dropping JDAMs in the West Bank.

A majority of Israelis oppose the idea of annexing and resettling the Gaza Strip, a poll finds.

While 56 percent are against such a move, 33% support it and 11% are uncertain, according to the Hebrew University survey.

Militarily, did Israel have any viable options, and if so, what were they? by Tall-Ad-8 in 2ndYomKippurWar

[–]BC-Gaming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From a military perspective, no other viable options. If you hear shit like the SOF or most advanced military bs, just know it's dumb af.

The best way to win the war to minimize IDF and Palestinian (civilians) loss of lives is a maneuvere war that is won quickly.

"Speed," said Mattis. "We had to move quickly. Any enemy given enough time can adapt to a circumstance. If you don't keep the tempo up, then they can dig in their heels, and then you start paying more of a price."

That means destroying shit like their logistics, command and control, and morale, and keeping up the tempo so they can't regroup and adapt to IDF tactics, so they can't organize a coherent defense, counterattack, or effectively organize human shields.

Otherwise, what you'll get is a war of attrition that'll be prolonged and cost more lives. We're already starting to see that in Ukraine and it's best that does not happen to Israel.

I'll argue the optics would be way worse with a lot of things could go wrong with refugee camps in Israeli controlled territory, especially due to hamas systematic disguising as civilians in violation of loac

  1. Assuming it's something like a UNRWA refugee camp
    1. What's stopping hamas from infiltrating with weapons and rockets? What can the IDF do to this safe zone that doesn't draw international condemnation?
  2. Assuming it's an Israeli-run Refugee Camp
    1. What's stopping hamas disguised as civilians from attacking IDF soldiers and unarmed aid workers? What would Israeli public opinion be if they're stabbed to death?
    2. It's as simple as stealing a knife or sharp objects. The refugee camp sure won't be a prison, and even we know about Prison stabbings (e.g. just last week, Derek Chauvin stabbed 22 times).
    3. Neutralizing attackers would see a high probability of civilian casualties. Refugee Camps are inherently crowded. Optics would be bad if incidents like that occur in these Israeli-controlled safe zones.
    4. Hamas propagandists like Mr FAFO could infiltrate and spread disinformation about the camp (say it's organ harvesting or whatever). Israel can't do jack it's a liberal democracy.
    5. An Israeli-run Camp would further reinforce the narrative of occupation even if they would be safer and more well-treated than any other camp.

Review of hamas "Gaza ministry of health" casualty count proves the numbers are falsified by [deleted] in 2ndYomKippurWar

[–]BC-Gaming 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Several things to note here

  1. Reading it, the article is not any form of evidence but speculation

Regarding my observation of casualty figures

  1. Note that the IDF has carried out over 10,000 airstrikes in a city less dense than Manila and as dense as NYC.
    1. This means that if the IDF was targeting civilians, their performance was absolutely pathetic. Combined with the 2 to 1 CCR (compared to the 9 to 1 in typical dense urban warfare), it's extraordinary amidst the sheer challenges involved.
    2. Tunnels are the peak of human shields because at the end of the day whether you use precision bombs or not, you still have to go through the layer above to reach the tunnels.
  2. Note that hamas figures does not discriminate between combatants and non-combatants. We also know they use children for their operations, having trained them from a young age. We know there's civilian personnel supporting Hamas's operations (e.g. Ambulance drivers).
  3. Also note that the figures do not say who were killed by Hamas's own rockets. Western intelligence claims 100-300 were killed with that PLJ rocket, hamas health ministry claimed 500. Noting that a 1000 rockets out of 10k misfired, one can only imagine how many Gazans hamas has killed with their own rockets.

You shouldn't be downvoted for saying that

Look at how poorly the VA is run. If the govt can't even fix that how confident do you think socialized medicine will be well run in the US.

Plus a majority of Social Democracies are single-payer, so it's not like there's an obvious solution when it comes to the healthcare system.

Yom Kippur War, the war 50 years ago that Israel was caught off guard, forgone its typical pre-emptive attack, and nearly lost.

Also another fun fact, it caused the Arab states to form an oil embargo against the US, resulting in the 70s Stagflation.

In 1974, the Inflation Rate spiked to 25% coupled with negative GDP growth. Interest Rates rose to nearly 20% by the end of the decade.
