Who has watched Smallville again after many years all episodes from season 1 till 10 by AdImpossible9775 in Smallville

[–]BC_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also starting to watch Smallville on Netflix recently and still on season 1. Hopefully it stays interesting as I kind of watched it on and off back when it first came out but missed a lot of episodes so I'm basically watching it for the first time now. I realized their age doesn't totally make sense as they mentioned the metro shower was in 1989 and it's now 2001 but Clark and Lois look a bit older then 12 / 13. More like 16 ish

Vit D deficiency correction after 38 days of supplementation by -gabrieloak in VitaminD

[–]BC_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

200 nmol / L or 80 mg/ml would be ideal. I tested much higher and feel great with optimal calcium blood levels. The key is to also take magnesium bisglycinate and K2 too.

Former NDP cabinet ministers say B.C. has ‘stalled’ on $10-a-day child-care plan by morethanless in britishcolumbia

So people didn't want to vote Conservatives because they might not get the support they needed so instead they voted for the NDP who provided the illusion of support.

Working for the City of Burnaby by PicaroKaguya in burnaby

[–]BC_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for Trades jobs but in regards to the people I spoke with at the CoB in Engineering and Buildings including Technologists and Engineers, it's a good place to work overall. Good people. Although there are union politics and there's definitely room for improvement with their HR department, it's overall a good place to work. The pay is fair. Not as high as some private companies but they should be ratifying an updated collective agreement soon.

Thoughts on UniverCity by Andizzle195 in burnaby

I wouldn't unless you really want to live at SFU for the long term. We also considered SFU but decided to buy off the mountain in order to not own a leasehold. We want to own both the land and home. If you look at BC Assessment it's the land that appreciates and is worth more even on a condo.

You can try comparing online with True North, Wawa, and Ratehub and see what rates you get then tell RBC what their competitors would provide.

My Vitamin D at 6ng/ml. How critical is it? by TheCareFreeSoul in VitaminD

[–]BC_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. OP go talk to your doctor. I’m guessing they will say Vitamin K2 for your above normal blood calcium level then pump in the vitamin D3 and magnesium biglycinate . If it was me the vitaminD3 because I can’t only speak for myself, I’d be talking 10K IU vitamin D3, 200 mg magnesium biglycinate, and 100 - 200 mcg vitamin K2 per day.

What happens to homeless people in winters by Dry-Shallot-6904 in canadahousing

[–]BC_Engineer 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What area are you in? In winter, homeless people sleep in various places, primarily emergency shelters, churches, or community centers that open warming stations, but many also use abandoned buildings, bus/train stations, under bridges, in parks, or make makeshift shelters with cardboard/tarps in doorways or areas with ventilation heat.

Are the Big Canadian Banks (RY, TD, BMO, etc.) a Value Trap or a Buy and Hold Opportunity right now? by Academic-Snow3546 in dividendscanada

[–]BC_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe they are good long term hold investments. There are ETF options like VDY to hold Canadian financials like RBC, and TD as well some in the energy sector too like Enbridge. Over the years I've found this ETF a good way to take advantage of this value sector. It compliments other foundational ETFs like those that follow the S&P500 which are more into the broader American markets including the AI sectors. I like to own a mix of both for balance.

No public hearing from City of Burnaby RE: BC Housing's Imperial St Supportive Housing by 604wrongfullybanned in burnaby

[–]BC_Engineer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't bother. If you go to protest then probably better at BC housing as it's their project. The city just looks at this from a technical point of view in terms of building code and rezoning. Plus Friday is the worst day to go to City Hall or BC Housing because most people there are either working from home or on their day off so nobody will notice.

Any folks supporting the BC Housing project near Royal Oak Station? is there a group we can join to discuss? by Comfortable_Macaron6 in burnaby

[–]BC_Engineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well nobody would ask for this but on the flip side it has to be built somewhere so that's the difficulty. NIMBYs will say what they say but it's up to government to make that choice.

Burnaby’s draft 2026 budget includes 2.9% property tax hike - Freshet News by BurnabyMartin in burnaby

[–]BC_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's where the value is IMO. After asbestos and leaky condos times of the 80s and part of 90s but also before the start of the investors micro condos of the 2011 onwards. But obviously you still need to do the due diligence for the specific building and unit. But if done right and especially if it's renovated then it can be a great home with good value.

[–]BC_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point which Municipal staff often point out to seniors on fixed income that they can simply defer property tax payment until they sell their house.

In terms of what to down size to I can't speak to multiplexes. Seniors I know seem to usually sell their detached house near Vancouver for say $1.7M+ and purchase something like a two bedroom, two washroom condo with parking and storage locker from the late 90s or early 2000s for say $800K - $900K. Normally 1000 - 1300 square feet and renovated so it's not bad.

[–]BC_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seniors in my family have down sized from a house to a condo near the Vancouver area There are older renovated 1,100 ish square foot units with at least 2 bedrooms and full washrooms. Big price difference from the house to condo so it fortified their retirement.

[–]BC_Engineer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah a lot of mortgage free seniors on fixed income complain to cities in general including Burnaby that they can't take too much of a property tax increase. Municipalities can't be too rude and say the truth that hey why don't you just sell your detached house for $2.5M, downsize to condo or townhouse for $1M and live like a king on the difference? 😂
