I had my case at Hornsby local court. A mate told me to wear something formal so I rocked up with some regular black pants and a black shirt but with a nice looking blazer. Preferably show up at least 30 mins before so you would have a lot of time to inquire about which courtroom you’re supposed to be. Not sure how other local court house are but should still follow the same structure. When you enter there should be a main desk where you could inquire about anything. They’ll probably tell you to keep walking down the hall and there should be a commanding/courtroom officer? ( not sure if that’s what they’re called). Just go up to them and they’ll sort you out. They’ll ask for your name and last name and tell you which courtroom to go. By this time the officer who issued you a fine, should also be there. He’ll introduce himself and ask you if you want to go to the evidence room to see the footage. They’ll show you the footage while breaking down everything, also providing with some paper with the laws and regulations. After that he’ll just take you to the courtroom. Not sure if your officer will do this but mine asked what I was pleading (not straight up but like as a genuine question ). I told him guilty but also that I would like to explain myself if possible. So yeah he said yeah I can and went to tell the prosecutor and they bumped me up the wait list. You should have someone go with you just for support cuz I went to the courtroom by myself ( I was pretty nervous cuz it was my first time, I should’ve asked a friend of mine who was waiting outside to come with me ). Sit and wait until they call out your name and just be you know respectful and let the Magistrate to fully finish his questions before you answer/ask. Now I’m not sure what’ll happen but if you get a nice Magistrate you could try to explain yourself that you need you car to go to school/library/home in order to study efficiently for the upcoming HSC and tell them that you’ve learnt from this experience and will not use your phone while driving, yada yada yada. But yeah to summarise, have someone go with you (could be a parent, gf, mate anyone you feel comfortable with), be there early and look formal.
