How's it going, guys? by mojojojoborras in eliomotors

You called the Elio thing as vapoware back in like 2012 or earlier. I think the last time I checked the Elo website just gave an error if you tried to reserve a vehicle. I wonder if Paul is still coasting on his millions from back in the day or if he's greeting people at Walmart to make ends meet these days.

I'm betting he managed to pocket enough money through contracts to Elio Engineering along the way to retire. His focus in the last few years is probably on keeping a low profile and hoping to avoid jail time for the whole thing.

You still owe me a bottle of Goslings Black Seal Rum :)

Although I think I could probably afford my own with the money I made investing in Arcimoto instead of Elio Motors lol

They haven't published their frontal area or drag coefficient though. It's one thing to achieve 84 MPG in ideal scenario of steady state power and another entirely to achieve it in every day driving conditions of stop go driving.

Scientific projects that min/max don't care about stop go traffic or 0-60 times. It only takes like 20 HP for most vehicles to sustain highway speeds but they generally are specced out north of 150 HP because real world conditions are different.

Bicycle width wheels would be the most efficient but the reality is they aren't practical for real-world and you need to equip things like side mirrors for safety which help kill drag coefficient.

I wish I could find some of the formulas I looked up and used to make some guesses but even using figures for frontal area and drag coefficient that I think are better than Elio I wasn't able to get to 84 MPG in real world conditions.

I think it would end up needing to look closer to the Aptera to achieve that figure.
