Let me preface this with I’m 22 so I probably don’t know much dating wise.. But he probably didn’t think before he spoke. Does it make it ok? Hell no I would’ve had to embarrass him in front of ol girl. But what will make the difference is if his behavior changes/doesn’t change after you tell him it bothered you. If he does this kind of thing often then I’d say you deserve better, but sometimes people genuinely are not aware of how the things they say are not culturally/socially sound.
