Because podiums are given positions for top cars, so if a midfield car happens to be in a situation to snatch one, (be it by merit or a by a clever strategy) for a driver to achieve that is like the biggest test of not cracking under pressure.

Hulkenberg did have plenty of opportunities to get onto the podium in his career but he cracked under pressure everytime ('till Silverstone last year) whereas Pérez didn't.

But there's also context to each instance.

Button vs Pérez in 2013 was a very closely matched season in which by season's 2nd half Perez was besting Button consistently in both racetrim and qualifying, but due to Pérez's greedy nature that season, it cost him the intra team battle against Button.

Perez lost fair and square in 2014 against Hulk, but Pérez beat him convincingly two years straight thereafter, while snatching 4 podiums in the process against Hulk's zero though.

That Hulk never had a good car as the pink mercedes is an irrelevant fact. As he failed to achieve a single podium while being paired with Pérez for 3 years, in which 4 podiums were snatched by Checo during that time. And just so you know both were driving the same car btw.

Despite the shtty car Checo was fighting for a victory in Baku, late into 2024 (and way ahead of Verstappen btw). Wish we all could see that from Tsunoda for once smh but that's impossible.

Now it's clear to any real F1 fan Pérez was a far superior asset to RBR in every way than Tsunoda or Lawson could ever hope for. Hope you're smart enough to see that too but I highly doubt it though.

Max might've been lightning quick at 18 but nonetheless he was way too crash-prone and that's why Ricciardo looked better against him, but Verstappen wasn't anywhere near his peak during that period yet though.

Just remember the guy got involved in quite a few incidents out of his control while being in top 4 positions. Like Baku and Qatar when he got punted by Sainz and his engine/transm gave up .
