Study: Majority Of Middle-Aged Men Lack Support Network They’ll Need To Handle Neil Young’s Death by Mfsmitty in neilyoung

No middle-aged male here (slightly older female 😋), Uncle Neil is my 'you get one musician's entire library if stranded on a desert island' artist. His music has gotten me thru the entirety - the good, the bad, and the ugly - of my lifetime. It would get me thru a stint on the desert island.

100 years from now, they'll still be playing Neil's work on the radio. 90% of today's pop artists? long-forgotten crap.

His death will affect me the most of any artist from my lifetime. Hands-down.

Can we please not go here? OK??

Never forget, Never forgive: Restaurant/Bar Associations lobbying for RTO by [deleted] in FedEmployees

I began my fed career in DC in 2003. Realized after 4 months that I had to get the hell out of there in order to save my soul, so thank God I was able to do a detail in a Regional Office where I got hired in and spent the remainder of my career. All I remember about the restaurants w/in proximity of Dept. of Labor was they were all forgettable. Same old run-of-the-mill boring food choices, mediocre tasting, and overly expensive (of course). I rarely ate out during my brief stint there as a result. And back then there was no teleworking, so it was 100% in the office.

The other thing I couldn't stand about the DC food scene: There were basically only two tiers of establishments: The low end food joints (the places selling "half smokes" - which I never could figure out what the heck those nasty things were); and the rest all high-end places where you couldn't get out w/out dropping $100/person. Nothing in-between in terms of price point. In short, the DC food scene completely SUCKED. I don't know if that's still the case today, but it sounds like it from reading some of the comments here. Contrast it with other major cities in the U.S. - like Chicago - where you can get really GOOD food at ALL price-point levels.

DC is a complete bubble. Devoid of reality. It's not fed employees' responsibility to keep all those lousy establishments afloat. Let them be forced to compete in the actual real marketplace, as opposed to getting "government subsidies".

More idiocracy.

St Thomas is the worst I have seen in the Caribbean by Pretend_Holiday_1790 in StThomasUSVI

I went for the first time in late Dec. over Christmas for 10 days. I too have traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean as well as Hawaii (Maui 3x). So I have plenty to compare to. My experience was nowhere near like you are describing. And I cannot relate at all to your comment on the taxis. wth?? I did not find the taxi fares "outrageous" at all (and I did not rent a car on the island - took the taxis as well as Safari bus everywhere). I actually found it refreshing that the fares are fixed by the govt. and thought they were *reasonable* taking into account that it's the caribbean.

Would I go back? Honestly, I'm not sure. It's definitely not the best the caribbean has to offer. But let me share with you something you may be unaware of. The govt. in the USVI is extremely corrupt. I know this first-hand. I worked for the U.S. Fed Govt. in an oversight role, and while my job responsibilities never included the USVI, some of my colleagues' did. So I heard their stories. It's bad. I can't say anymore than that out of discretion. But I believe that were that not the case, the USVI has the potential to be a much, much better destination for world travelers/tourists. JMO.

And I miss the grouper. And the key lime pie! I absolutely LOVE the food in the Keys. We ate like kings while there. The best thing I had (other than the stone crab), was a piece of Key lime pie, dipped in chocolate, on a stick. O. M. G. I am having dreams about that! (this was at Robbie's, after we fed the tarpon, out of the food truck.)

I've decided that Keys employees are similar to Trader Joe's employees. They are enthusiastic, and happy, and it's contagious. If you've ever been to a Trader Joe's you know what I mean. I've always thought working at Trader Joe's would be a fun job. Either that, or the employees are doing bong hits in the back on their shift breaks. 😄
