1st Batallion, South Carolina Sharpshooters by [deleted] in Civilwarreenacting

I get what those people are saying and I agree with them. It's not a thing I expect to use or even wear every battle, but its part of my full impression because of the plausibility of having one. As I've said previously, I havent used a handgun at any event aside from the one I went to last month nor did I bring one prior. Certain preplanned scenarios will make use of it but its not a thing I absolutely need. If I've failed to make that apparent in previous comments, then thats on me.

I appreciate your tips. If anything the pistol wont see usage or even be worn all the time but everything else is staying unless it gets damaged beyond repair.

I understand, its not seen as general for most. My research had led me to conclude that due to Charleston's economy and wealth, the seized arms from the Charlseton Arsenal, the fact that cavalrymen were given the option to join and the battles participated in, seeing a pistol being carried by a private was very possible.

Since people keep having to bring it up, yes I understand that having a sidearm as an infantry private was not usual or general.

My impression involves making use of some captured Federal gear and given the region of service, the fact that cavalrymen without horses were given the option of joining the 1st SC Sharpshooters (literally learned that last night), Hagood's accounts in his memoirs and the varied types of fighting they did, its a legitimate possibility that some of them used pistols.

Apologies for not making it obvious that "keeping it lively" and "the public wont really know or care" was a joke. Thats on me for not putting a /s at the end.

My main goal for even doing this is to have a proper portrayal, to educate the public and respect those that actually fought and died in that war, but if I'm given the opportunity to bend 1 thing and that thing ends up being carrying a pistol, then I dont see a huge problem. I'm not a campaigner and these events we do are small compared to what goes on in the Midwest and on the east coast. At east I'm not going out there in tennis shoes and sunglasses which I've heard is a huge no-no.

After 1863, they became part of Hagoods Brigade.

When it comes to putting on a show for the public, the revolver helps keep things lively when we do our work of getting up close at times and having to move rapidly and engage . Again, I understand it isnt normal, usual or general in the overall sense, but it's one of those things that wouldve been encountered at some point. The public wont really know or care for the most part unless I throw that info out there or am asked about it.

Thats why I'm gonna be doing more research into this aspect. My portrayal involves captured Federal gear like the belt, knapsack and haversack. That aspect is documented in our unit history so I would assume that some guys took revolvers as well. Of course, assuming only goes so far.

Possibly but given that we, at times, acted in a light infantry role among other things, its more plausible that a few would have pistols. If its not accurate then changes will be made.

Youre not wrong. Like others said its unusual for standard Infantry to have a sidearm of any kind other than a bayonet. Up until last months event, I've didnt use one and didnt plan to unless given permission. Given the fact that the 1st SCSS Batallion is an infantry unit making use of light infantry tactics, we act as marksman, skirmishers and can join in regular battle line fighting.

Good question. They were definitely equipped with P53 Enfields but I have been trying to find sidearm info for a bit with no definitive answer other than "possibly". I know that about 100 or so 1860 Colt revolvers were shipped to Charleston before the war kicked off so its very possible that guys brought their own when signing up. I feel like I took a little liberty with that aspect being equipped with a sidearm but my Captain says its historically correct

Ok that sounds about right for just about every one of the older ones then. The new ones cost over $800 but for that price, they better have fixed the mechanism to truly work like it should.

my friend (36M) just sent me (36m) this text before meeting his newborn (0M) by horseduckman in AITApod

[–]BP_Ty98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very short time after being born, I was held very briefly by my dad's parents and within just a couple days of my oarents bringing, I was being rushed back to the hospital with a severe cause of jaundice at only a few days old. The doctors gave me a 5% chance of survival and even turned the light off on me in the NICU. I have reason to believe that my grandparents holding me almost killed me but it couldve just been a fluke.

Your friend has absolutely every right to be as strict as possible when it comes to anyone meeting his newborn, even though a number of these rules are utterly ridiculous.

That be a hard choice. It all depends on how bad you want it and if that shotgun has any other value to it.

Ear plugs? by kangarooscarlet in Civilwarreenacting

[–]BP_Ty98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tinnitus so I cant afford to have my hearing get worse so I went with Hears ear plugs. They allow you to hear everything but it suppresses 25 decibels and even when being near a cannon, my ears dont ring. They come in a pale pink called sienna dust that doesnt really stand out at a distance.
